Conversations with Johnny Praize

Today we’d like to introduce you to Johnny Praize.

Hi Johnny, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Johnny Praize: From the Streets of Newark to Global Pioneer in Hip-Hop, Illustration and Ministry

Johnny Praize, formerly known as Def J Le Fresh, has carved out a legacy as one of the most innovative voices in hip-hop and Christian music. Born and raised in the rough streets of Newark, New Jersey, Johnny’s journey began with the graffiti-painted walls and the raw sounds of the projects. There, surrounded by struggle and survival, he discovered both his passion for art and his love for music. Learning the craft from local graffiti artists and influenced by the rhythms that echoed through his neighborhood, Johnny developed not only his skills but also a deep heart for the youth who, like him, were searching for hope amid the chaos of the streets.

As Def J Le Fresh, Johnny became a true pioneer in the Latin American hip-hop scene. He broke new ground by being the first rapper to blend English and Spanish in a single track with his landmark song “So Def.” He also introduced the cypher-style rap to Latin America with “Son Solo Niños,” a groundbreaking collaboration featuring salsa singer Angel Lopez and produced by Baron Lopez. Never one to stay confined to tradition, Johnny went on to merge salsa with rap in “Siento Rap Remix,” featuring Pedro Arroyo—an innovative move that shattered musical barriers and inspired generations of artists worldwide.

Johnny’s fearless creativity positioned him as a cultural trailblazer, breaking down linguistic and stylistic walls in ways that gave a voice to communities long overlooked in mainstream hip-hop. His legacy as a pioneer of Spanish rap in Puerto Rico is further cemented through his collaborations with Pedro Arroyo, Angel Lopez, Mimz, Baron Lopez, and Johnny-O.

But the story doesn’t stop there. Def J Le Fresh evolved into Johnny Praize, a transformation fueled not only by artistry but by faith. Today, he stands as a driving force in Christian hip-hop, blending his talents as a rapper, singer, lyricist, and producer under his label Rice and Beats Productions. His music is a powerful fusion of street authenticity and spiritual conviction, lifting up listeners while pointing them toward the hope he found in his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Beyond music, Johnny is a multifaceted creative—an illustrator, cartoonist, and digital artist specializing in Christian, children’s, humor, inspirational, and life-themed illustrations. His artwork is featured globally through major platforms like Getty Images, iStock, Adobe Stock, Can Stock, and Shutterstock.

Equally important is Johnny’s mission off the stage. As the founder of ROGIC Ministries, he brings his heart for the lost and the broken directly into the streets, ministering to those who need it most. His journey from Newark’s graffiti-tagged walls to international stages and digital platforms serves as a testament to resilience, reinvention, and faith.

Today, Johnny Praize continues to inspire audiences worldwide—through beats, through art, and through ministry. Whether spitting bars that cross languages, sketching illustrations that spark joy, or reaching out to the youth who remind him of his own beginnings, Johnny’s message is clear: nothing is impossible with Jesus, and no one is too lost to be found.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Growing up in the projects of Newark NJ was extremely difficult and dangerous to say the least. The desire to be free from that environment provided the fuel that ignited the fire that I needed for change. I knew that I needed to do something so I pressed hard into God, art and music, and that combination propelled me to freedom.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As mentioned previously, I’m mostly known for my contribution in the launch of Spanish hip hop in Puerto Rico. I’m proud of the family I have that has and continues to support my dreams. What sets me apart is my devotion to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who has opened so many doors for me, including this interview.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I grew up without my father and without mentors, so the only one that I can give full credit to is my Father in heaven!
