Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Walker.
Hi Kristen , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been writing through different mediums since I was a child. Singing and theater came as practiced talents throughout my childhood. Music stuck with me as I grew into adulthood, and it evolved into a way for me to grow, learn, and express myself. I always like to thank my mama, because I grew up in a rural area, but she always provided for me to explore what I was interested in from piano lessons to karaoke machines; she and my family made sure I was exposed to Art, and I like to think I’m blessed for that. Because of it, I have a wide range of training, inspiration, and experience—from Classical, to jazz & funk, Rhythm and Blues, I love it all, and I enjoy the challenge of working with different genres. Recently, Co-engineering “Sticks and Stones with Neicey Mo is a testament to that. I also have a long line of people to thank, that have helped me along the way—family, friends, co-workers, and supporters that come from Mississippi, & all over, far and wide. I am so grateful for that and the gift of Music.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been easy. I think for me, adapting to the age of music we are in, was hard. These days, I am learning how to integrate the two worlds, and working towards building visual art that feels authentic, and “reel” (ha!), to showcase my music and other talents through.
I’m a perfectionist, and can be a bit of a workaholic, so sometimes it can be a bit frustrating because I would like to see things realized as quickly as they have formed in my mind. Being a middle class, independent artist, I have to practice patience. All in all, I’m appreciative of how creating in this way is allowing me to explore other sides of my vulnerability, and slowly, but surely, expanding my business acumen…it all works together, right?
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I enjoy creative art as a whole, and enjoy expressing that through different mediums, but over the past few years, songwriting and performance art through music have been what I specialize in most. I am most known for my songwriting, and a most proud of all of the genuine connections I’ve been able to make through collaboration.
I think what sets me apart from others is I look at what I do as an opportunity to be a light and give acts of service. I like the idea that music if done right, can teach you something, move you, change you, empower you even. So I take different measures to express that through song, small, but thoughtful gifts at my shows, down to the way we curated my merchandise.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I have an interest in music production, and would love to be able to produce and record my own records, one day too! In college, I co-produced a record called “All on My Own”. A rough cut for sure, but a lot of potential with a very disco feel. I also enjoy teaching beginners meditation classes, and recently I’ve taken working with the name “Flower” to a whole new level! Stay tuned! Ha!
