Exploring Life & Business with Chavonne Starr of StarEra Productionz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chavonne Starr

Chavonne, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started writing in my journal and diary every since I could write and form a sentence. I wrote my first novel on notebook paper while taking calls in a call center. I passed it around to each college I talked to. I published that novel in 2012. A best friend and I decided why not start our own production company so I could tell as many stories as I wanted as many ways as we possibly can. We took a portion of both of our last names and came up with StarEra. After writing another short story we decided to try and make it a short film. Missing the deadline on submitting for the film, we decided to make this story a stage play. We produced our first play in Oklahoma City, Ok in 2022 and just wrapped up our second play January 2025 in Mansfield, Tx.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In no way was it a smooth road. Our biggest setback was believing we had to have a lot of money to start, that held us back for a while. We had no resources and didn’t know where to start. When we got started, we realized marketing was very important to get the word out, but we had no marketing budget. Every time we met with someone it was always what is your budget. We had none. One thing we never did was stop believing. I decided I would continue to push forward to make things happen and it did. We still have small struggles with finding certain cast members but in due time we will find exactly what we are looking for to help tell the story that is being told.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Published author of D-Town King Novel a gritty street urban novel about characters navigating the streets of Dallas, Tx. I specialize in storytelling, through sharing stories that we can provoke emotions, gain knowledge and raise awareness of situations we don’t always talk about. Here at StarEra we want to actively contribute to social change with each project. We want to work closely with non-profit organizations for kids who have a parent that is incarcerated as well as the homeless. I am proud that we represent loyalty and togetherness whether that be with the crew to the cast.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I found a mentor by simply jumping in the dm of DP Demarco about a set design and he allowed me to attend his shows to show me the important parts of producing a stage play. In order for your business to grow you have to get out of your comfort zone and build relationships to gain knowledge. Don’t be afraid to take a chance.
