Hi Angela, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I had chemical relaxer on my face!
The licensed cosmetologist dropped her brush and spilled relaxer on my face! And she didn’t use neutralizing shampoo over the entire affected area!
I had to undergo chemical burn treatment with Silvadene cream. BTW, Silvadene can’t be exposed to sunlight and must be covered in bandages.
If I hadn’t yet realized the dangers of chemical relaxers, this should’ve been a wake-up call.
I’ve had chemical burns on my scalp before. It feels like slices when washed, then oozes crusts over, and eventually heals over a 5–7-day period.
Not true for the face! I know better now!
And before this, I’d already lost my hair twice to chemical relaxers. Once from a kitchen beautician. And once from a licensed cosmetologist.
Still, I hesitated transitioning from chemicals as I was anxious about styling and caring for my natural hair.
Just like you, all I knew was hot pressing combs, chemical relaxers, and Jheri curls.
But I started right where I was and used my life-long journey of learning all things hair to create the natural hair care products I needed.
At that time, it wasn’t about selling products; it was about solving my problem with premium ingredients and moisture-loving formulations.
After losing my corporate job, I decided to sell the products I’d spent the last year perfecting.
I decided to launch CurlyCoilyTresses®, a dream fulfilled but not one I even knew I had.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The most significant obstacle to growing CurlyCoilyTresses® has been funding; Black female founders received just 0.34% of the total venture capital spent in 2022. In lieu of, I spend a significant amount of time applying for grants. Up to this time, I have funded CurlyCoilyTresses® primarily from personal funds.

I am most proud of our progress. I launched CurlyCoilyTresses® from my apartment with product formulas I created and refined over many months after spending a lifetime learning all things hair! I hand-made all products and self-fulfilled all orders! And now, I have warehouse, manufacturing and digital teams, as well as a virtual assistant. It’s been an incredible and exciting journey!
