Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Rebekah Cone.
Hi Laura, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Five years ago, I had no idea what I wanted to do for a career. I did know, however, that I wanted freedom and to build something that would make a positive impact. After working for a San Antonio company for ten years, I made the hard decision to leave. I had not been given the opportunity to grow and I valued myself enough to realize that. I chose to take that leap of faith and to take my talents elsewhere. My husband had some amazing opportunities in Digital Marketing and we decided to start our own company called Cone Creatives. He had excellent experience already within Digital Marketing so it made sense to have him handling client services. With my ten years of administrative work, I easily managed the behind-the-scenes work as COO. As we grew, it became necessary for me to become more involved in the marketing side of our company. The more I learned about digital marketing, the more I LOVED it. Our client base was increasing and had rave things to say about our services for them. In the midst of that, we found a love for nonprofit services. We are able to make positive impacts, and that’s really why we started Cone Creatives. It’s incredibly rewarding to see.
My husband recently got offered an incredible opportunity outside of Cone Creatives and I encouraged him to take it. He, in turn, encouraged me to take over running CC. I didn’t balk at the challenge; I embraced it. Cone Creatives now has an all-woman team that spans the globe and continues to grow. As an employer, my goal is to not just focus on company growth but on personal growth as well. Goals are important within Cone Creatives, and we try our best to ensure all our employees’ goals are being achieved. Having employees who know that they are appreciated and know that growth is encouraged has made my job all the more fun. As we continue to grow, I am truly so excited to see how Cone Creatives will evolve and accomplish in the amazing world of Digital Marketing.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Starting a business is no small feat, and challenges were expected, but the hurdles we had were quite intense. There were some dark and discouraging days. Looking back, neither my husband nor myself knew what we were getting into. But… we would do it all over again in a heartbeat. I love what we do. I love seeing our clients’ happiness when we present to them their new marketing. I love the personal growth we experienced as a couple and individually. We did struggle, but we learned and we grew. We have become better humans and better business owners because of our original failures.
As Colin Powell has said, “There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.”
One thing early on we struggled with were boundaries. We were risking so much starting our own business that we didn’t set boundaries with our clients. We were going hard 24/7 and we almost burned out. After that, we realized that having work/life balance was the key to our success. Changing our approach has made our quality of life so much better. Our clients are getting the best of what we offer and our work is top quality.
Another lesson we learned was that we cannot and we should not do everything. Our rapid growth made it necessary for us to bring on team members who had specific skill-sets. So when graphic design was needed, we had a designer that took 1 hour to complete something that would have taken us 5. The completed design was beautiful and the client was ecstatic. A win/win for all!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Cone Creatives?
We are a creative Boutique Digital Marketing Agency. That means we offer many different marketing services for your digital (online) marketing. Cone Creatives was founded out of a desire to do more than just “do work” for our clients. We are passionate about the services we offer. Our goal is to give our clients back their valuable time. We are experts in our fields and we take our expertise and provide our clients with a profitable return on their digital marketing budget. For our small and medium-sized clients, we become their entire marketing department.
Each client has a different need so we gather the information and put together a package that caters to that exact need. For example, we were approached by a nonprofit client that wanted to improve their digital reach and get signatures. Our tailored digital marketing approach was so successful that we were able to increase their email outreach from 3,000 people to 90,000 in a little over a month. Additionally, because of their increase in reach, they also were able to help gather during that same period around $65,000 in donations! That same list is still being used to help spread their message and continue raising donations.
We work with traditional businesses as well. We create all social media profiles (Facebook, Instagram, etc.), create banners and logos for them, set up email accounts, design and set up all ads and manage all reporting. It’s the fine details and consistency that go on behind the scenes that boosts our clients’ reach and ultimately contributes to their success.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My parents have always said, “You are who you surround yourself with.” With that in mind, I surround myself with people who sharpen both my business life and my personal life. I am naturally an optimist, and my go-to people are as well. I enjoy any and all opportunities to talk to other business owners. Sharing insights and brainstorming solutions with like-minded people drives me to be better. Being a natural dreamer with big goals, I am incredibly blessed to have people in my life who believe in me, cheer me on and encourage me to pursue said dreams. I encourage new entrepreneurs to find other entrepreneurs and help each other. As your companies grow, use your knowledge and success to educate and encourage others. Success is waiting for you. I believe that America still offers “the American dream” if you are willing to work for it.
