Today we’d like to introduce you to Bunmi Lawal.
Hi Bunmi, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hi, my name is Bunmi (pronounced Boom – me). I’m a wife, mother, pharmacist, and founder of Sweet Boom Bakery. I’ve been baking literally all of my life. I was always the girl trying out new recipes and bringing them to her classmates. What can I say, my love language is food! From brownies in middle school to ooey-gooey cakes in college, I’ve always had a love for creating yummy treats. After college, I spent a lot more time focusing on my career, and I didn’t have as much time/energy for baking. During the pandemic, I gave birth to my daughter, and just like half of the world, was making an attempt to bake bread from scratch (let’s just say we’ll leave the bread-making to the professionals lol). Early in 2021, I started baking cakes again with the mission of perfecting my skills so I could make all of my daughter’s birthday cakes (yes, I wanted to be that mom). The process of learning to make her birthday cake really unlocked a passion for the art of creating delicious and pretty cakes and I was determined to continue to make more! I started asking friends if they wanted cakes and before I knew it, I was inundated with birthday cakes to engagements cakes! It has been a wild but exciting ride and we are just getting started!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There were quite a few struggles along the way. As a new business owner, I had to learn all about contracts and invoices to help keep everything in order. Additionally, it took some time for me to figure out my decorating style and what mediums I liked to work with. (Currently not a huge fan of fully covered fondant cakes, I have horror stories lol). As a new baker, I had to nail down various techniques and some of my recipes and methods for baking needed more work. When I first started, I had no idea how to stack a multi-tier cake or even how to safely deliver them. It took some time to figure it out, but we’ve seen a lot of growth. The road has become much smoother!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

We offer a variety of flavors and are willing to try your favorite flavor combinations to ensure you have the best. Why settle for a vanilla cake (although we make a yummy vanilla cake) when you can have a chocolate chip vanilla cake with edible cookie dough layer and chocolate ganache?!? We love exploring new flavors with our clients, but also mastering the classics flavors we all know and love!
What matters most to you? Why?
Honestly, what matters most to me is my faith and family. I’m beyond grateful for my husband and our amazing community. I would happily put my degree, my job, and my business to the side for my family. They mean the absolute world to me. I honestly only seriously considered baking cakes after realizing I wanted my daughter to be proud of the cakes that I make her every year for her birthday. Every cake I bake and every order I do are just little steps in the right direction to keep getting better and better for her and for myself.
Something else that matters to me is letting other moms know that you can work full time, love your babies and still pursue you passions. Your dreams don’t have to end, the moment you have kids. I never could’ve dreamed that I could start a business, especially with the expansion of our family. I’m doing what I love and bringing my little one on the journey with me. She’s in the kitchen with me most times and loves making buttercream and cake batter.
