Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Denton.
Hi Heather, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Bark N Fetch was a dream in the making for more than 20 years. I was 23 years old when I wrote my first business plan for an upscale pet boarding facility. However, I did not have the money and backing at the time, so I set the idea aside and went into sales. Over the years, I volunteered with animal organizations while working the corporate job life, but never gave up my dream of owning my own business. I kept my passion and love for animals alive and it was very visible to my family and friends.
During that time, we had a Golden that had severe itchy skin. We spent a lot of time at the doggie dermatologist and money on visits and prescription medications that never fully helped and the minute we stopped taking anything, he’d start itching again. I started to research food which led me to discover that the source of so many pet allergies is often related to their FOOD. That discovery led me to a store in Dallas that not only sold the food I was looking for but also had everything else that no other store around carried. That got me thinking….. why don’t we have this in Frisco?
So, fast forward to a mutual friend introducing me to an amazing woman named Marsha Lindsey. She is a big supporter of women entrepreneurs and she just happened to own Lucky Dog Barkery… the store I had been shopping at! That’s where the idea for Bark N Fetch in Frisco took flight. I had Marsha’s guidance, my family and friends’ support and a strong devotion to the health and happiness of animals…. and a great name idea from my oldest son, Knox…Bark N Fetch finally became a reality.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not! If it was easy, everyone would do it. It took me 23 years to get here… so yes, there were certainly obstacles, but I would not change it for a thing. Every lesson, and every setback I have encountered along the way, has helped me get where I am today.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Bark N Fetch?
Here is a great statement from my website! “From puppies and kittens to adult and senior pets, Bark N Fetch is the place to go for everything you and your furry baby need and wants. We’re locally owned and crazy about finding the crème de la crème of pet care products that will help your pets live happy healthy lives, whether it’s premium top-quality food, a destined-to-be-favorite toy, a cozy bed, or trendy, stylish supplies.
Most importantly, you never have to worry about ingredients or quality. We only sell the best for your pet because we won’t settle for anything less. Your pets, our passion.” We just hosted an event last weekend where I was able to donate a portion of our sales to Golden Retriever Rescue of North TX and we are doing an Angel Tree in December for rescues in the area. This is very near and dear to my heart. I also offer a discount to those that adopt and bring in their paperwork w/in 30 days.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Marsha Lindsey was my mentor. The owner of Lucky Dog Barkery Ben Pratt has been my guide on everything about the day to day on the running of a store. General Manager of Lucky Dog Barkery. My family: Todd (husband), Knox (13 yr old son), and Hayes (9 yr old son). Without their support and the sacrifices we made as a family… this dream would have never become a reality.
