Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Shavonne(DJ) Gay of Oaklawn

Shavonne(DJ) Gay shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Shavonne(DJ), a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Integrity is more important to me because it’s the only trait that makes you trustworthy and governs every decision when no one is watching. Integrity creates internal alignment. It’s who YOU ARE when everything else is stripped away.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is DJ, also known as Thee Kitchen Beast. I’ve been operating my food truck for 4 years, but I’ve been cooking for over 12 years. I started out in fine dining restaurants and I decided to venture out and work for myself. I serve high quality restaurant food from a food truck. My brand represents QUALITY. What makes me unique is the kind of food I serve, the hours I work, the presentation, and the experience I give to everyone who supports me. I’m very passionate about my brand and you can taste the love in every bite!

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
The relationship I have with my brother has shaped how I see myself, because in so many ways, we are the same. When I look at him, I see not just a reflection of myself, but a guide and someone whose strength, integrity, and kindness show me the person I continuously aspire to be. More than just a sibling, he is my best friend, my confidant, and my inspiration. The way he faces life with courage, humility, and a heart full of generosity has taught me so much about who I am. I am grateful every day for him, and for the bond that has shaped me!

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be:

It’s okay to not have everything figured out. You are enough, exactly as you are, and the struggles you face now are shaping the strength, wisdom, and compassion you will carry for the rest of your life.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I deeply admire my brother Ken for the person he is. He’s one of the most genuine and real people I have ever known. He faces failure, hard work, and setbacks with courage, and he has the humility to apologize when it’s needed. His integrity is the foundation of everything he does. He has a heart of solid gold and treats everyone with kindness, respect, and dignity. He is a man of remarkable self-control, and so much of who I am today is because of him. I am endlessly grateful to have him as my brother. He is truly a BLESSING!

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
Honestly, if I retired tomorrow my customers would miss the experience I gave them. From the music, customer service, small talk, genuineness, late night food and the QUALITY. I’ve built some kind of rapport with nearly everyone who patronizes me on the regular. I remember names , orders and I always show love to everyone. I’ve built something people would feel the loss of. I created a TKB family and that’s UNREPLICABLE.
