Life & Work with Laura Silvas of DFW

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Silvas

Hi Laura, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I knew going into nursing school that Labor & Delivery was my calling. In fact, I told my nursing instructors that I would either be a L&D nurse or I would stay a waitress, and the Lord knew I meant it. I was offered a position out of nursing school direct into women & children’s. Not long after I found myself surrounded by babies all day, I was expecting my own. I knew that I wanted to breastfeed. Breastfeeding? So natural, so easy. I’m a labor nurse, I can do this. HA. It was not at all what I was expecting. Why is this so hard? Why is there so little support once you leave the hospital? Why do I keep running into the same problems? My own journey with my beautiful boy led me to where I am now, a RN IBCLC. I became a lactation consultant so that no other families would have to sit at home and worry what they are doing wrong. Originally being from West of Fort Worth, we decided it was time to leave our rural East Texas home (where I moved for nursing school and worked after) and come back to our family. That journey led us to our new home in Aubrey, in the heart of an area that is booming and growing. I decided this was a great place to utilize my knowledge, expertise, and personal experience to be the hands and feet of Jesus to these families. In a leap of faith, I started offering in home consultations under my business “Latching With Laura” in September of 2024. I was still growing my circle of friends in the area and knew there were still so many resources in DFW that I didn’t know about. Fortunately, my calendar filled and I’ve been blessed to help babies and families in this area. There’s not a single day that I don’t look forward to my consults. It is a true honor and privilege to be welcomed into the homes of families deep in the pits of postpartum.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest challenge has been getting my name out there. As I mentioned, there’s a lot of great resources in the DFW area. Which is so incredible. I’m a one woman show! Its up to me to handle both my services and all the administration. Learning to balance all those aspects of running a small business has been a learning experience.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a nurse and lactation consultant. I offer in home and virtual lactation consultations, evaluating anything and everything that aides in breastfeeding from latching, pumping, prenatal consultation, supply issues, infant oral restriction, etc.

I’m most proud of the relationships that I’ve built and continue to build with my patients. I’m introduced to them in the most private and intimate times of their life and honored to be a part of their journey.

In my practice, I focus on embracing each patient and their unique needs and goals. In the medical field, sometimes back to back appointments tend to be rushed through, or “checked off”. I never want anyone to feel like they weren’t my center-point of my day.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the diversity of the people of DFW. As the area continues to grow, so does the culture, language, and perspectives.

The absolute worst part? Hwy 380. If you know, you know.
