Today we’d like to introduce you to Myah Mayhew
Hi Myah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My mother says that I practically came out of the womb singing. Music is my whole world; it’s all I have ever known. Whether it was my dad’s classic rock, my mom’s worship music, or two-year old Myah singing at the top of her lungs, there was never a moment in my house that wasn’t filled with music. Naturally, my parents put me in piano lessons as soon as I was old enough to sit still and focus, and the rest is history. Throughout elementary and middle school, I took voice and piano lessons, learned guitar, joined choir and theatre, and began to write and perform my own songs. I began to play acoustic gigs around DFW at age 14, and those gigs have blossomed into the full band set that I play today, most recently at a sold out show at the Cambridge Room at House of Blues. As a Jupiter Records artist and Music Major at Dallas Baptist University, I hope to use my skills that I have gained the last 18 years to continue to write and perform, bringing joy and catharsis to people who need it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a bumpy road in that it is super hard to make it in this industry if you don’t already have connections or a LOT of money. It can sometimes be discouraging to feel like I am working my ass off without a ton of reward. But when I start to think that way, I have to check myself and remind myself how truly lucky I am. I have parents, friends, professors, and colleagues who believe in me and are willing to invest in my future, and I owe it to them to have a good attitude and to continue to work hard even when I don’t feel like it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I used to market myself as a singer-songwriter, but lately that doesn’t feel accurate. I have been blessed to be a part of many different forms of art such as dance, band, choir, and theater in addition to my personal artist project. At the moment I am stage managing my college’s production of Pirates of Penzance while simultaneously recording a rock n’ roll EP, so I’m really just trying to surround myself with as many different types of art as I possibly can at once.
I am lucky to say that I have done a lot of things in my career thus far that I am extremely proud of. Most recently, I am most proud of my sold out show at the Cambridge room at House of Blues as a part of the Jupiter Records “Break the Stage” artist showcase. I am so grateful to my label for asking me to play, and I can’t wait to play many more shows of that caliber in the future.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
There are many things in my life that are important to me, but none are more important than my relationship with the Lord. I wouldn’t even have the ability to sing if it weren’t for Him, and I hope to use my talents for as much good as I possibly can. This may come as a surprise to some people since I write secular music, often about controversial topics, and even about problems with institutionalized religion, but I believe that I’ve been given a passion for these sensitive subjects for a reason- to speak about issues that I wouldn’t necessarily be able to speak on if I had a “traditional” Christian music career.
