Today we’d like to introduce you to Charity Simmons.
Hi Charity, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
A cool moment that I remember is having pictures professionally done when I was about 10 or 11 years old. I knew it was a big deal because my mom was coordinating outfits while explaining to us the importance of it and what to expect. It felt special to be doing this with her, and we were all excited! On the day of the photos, we were greeted by a cheerful photographer who had a warm smile which instantly made us feel comfortable. There were big sized photo prints on the walls of past clients and bright studio lights. He started by posing us, taking pictures from different angles, and telling funny jokes. That experience sparked something in me.
I held my aunt’s camera for the first time as a teenager and I did not want to put it down. From the moment she came into our family I remember her taking pictures at our family gatherings because she loved photography. As a freshman in high school, I started buying disposable film cameras and taking pictures of my friends and random things like my sister’s feet. I took a photography class in high school and joined the yearbook team. During that time I got to work with a DSLR camera for the first time along with other experiences that allowed me to experience photography at a different level than what I was used to. I purchased my first camera at the age of 18. It was a small, purple point-and-shoot camera from Walmart and I loved it!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Developing my photography editing style and unique way of shooting was a huge struggle. With limited resources, and fighting through the insecurity of not believing that I could pursue photography as a long-term career was something that held me back. Eventually, I grew past those insecurities, invested in photography education, and most importantly started believing in myself.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Charity Simmons Photography?
I’m a family and wedding photographer with 13 years of experience. Light and airy is my go-to style but you might also see some dark and moody images. Creating a space that empowers and connects like-minded creatives/photographers is so much fun! I am most proud of the genuine connections and the opportunity to serve families and couples during some of their most important moments in life.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
The drive to genuninely create lasting relationships while inspiring others to do what brings them joy is the most fulfiling aspect for me. An effective leader understands the importance of networking, not just to advance in their own careers but for the benefit of others by building strong and authentic connections.
