Meet Chase Leftwich and Austin Schumacher of TexMalt in Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chase Leftwich and Austin Schumacher.

Chase and Austin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We both (Austin and Chase) worked together prior to starting TexMalt. We home brewed and spent our free time at new local breweries and distilleries. One day, when speaking with the head brewer at Collective Brewing project, Ryan Deyo, we realized there was no one growing and/or malting Texas Grown grains…

After much trial and error working with Texas farmers across the state, we started producing malt in our warehouse on a “large scale”, summer of 2015. Since then we have had many farmers, breweries, and distilleries alike get on board with Texas grown and malted grains. This past summer 2017, we expanded operations into the historic OB Macaroni building in Near South Side Fort Worth, TX. We now have the ability to work with breweries and distilleries statewide to provide a unique to Texas product.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When starting a new business you can never expect a smooth road but if you love what you do it will help ease the bumps. Fortunately for us, we got in at a great time when craft beer is on the rise and distilleries are popping up all over.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
TexMalt is a local Texas malt house. A malt house is grain conditioner that works with local farmers to source this highest quality grains for production. We bring those grains in-house and “malt” them. Malted grains are widely used by the brewing, distilling, and baking industries worldwide.

We practice floor malting which is the traditional style of malting. We are known for providing a high quality yet locally sourced malt. Prior to TexMalt breweries and distilleries only had the choice of sourcing their malt from northern U.S., Canada, or overseas.

We are most proud of connecting Texas farming families with locally owned breweries and distilleries. To us, locally made means to build the product from the ground up with locally sourced ingredients.
