Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Blissett.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m going to be VERY honest with how I got started… I’m not that girl who says, “oh, I’ve always loved photography”. I didn’t always love it. But, I for sure do now!!! I never realized how important photographs were until you could see your kids change daily. And how important it is to photograph them through all stages of life.
Some more brutally honest here… I was spending so much money on photographers when my kids were very little (I had to get their portraits done every 3 months, of course)… that one day I thought… I could buy a good camera for as much as I’ve spent on photographers and just do this myself. As a professional photographer now… I can’t believe I ever thought that??? Boy, was I wrong, it’s not that simple! Great photographers make a great portrait. Moms with a DSLR camera just take photos. So, I have spent countless hour developing my skills and passion. I am still always practicing. Always trying something new. Always trying to be creative and think “outside of the box”. Always trying to better me.
My passion the past couple of years has grown into senior portraiture. I absolutely love photographing seniors! This is such an important time in their lives, and being a part of their senior year, is truly my honor! But, I secretly just want to be one of them when I grow up.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Has it been a smooth road… ummm, no! I could probably write a book on “What not to do”. I had technical struggles in the beginning (hence, just buying a DSLR camera and starting off as a Mom-tographer) and then my struggles ran into business struggles. It has taken me a while to realize how valuable my time is and to realize my photography-worth. My favorite part of being a photographer is shooting, creating, and editing! It takes a while to find “your style” as a photographer and I’m very proud of my style today. It takes a lot of learning and discovering to figure out what you like. You have to go through the hard times to figure out who you are.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’m a portrait photographer who specializes in High School Senior Portraiture. I’m most proud of my work and style… I really want seniors to love what they see when they see their portraits and I put my heart and soul into every senior session.
When I choose to shoot locations, photograph the subject, and edit a clients portrait, I always think of my photography motto… “life in color”. I love colors and everything bold! From the pre-planning consultation to the shoot, and to the viewing session of proofs… I want this to be an experience the senior (and parent) will never forget!
What were you like growing up?
Not to toot my own horn, but I’d say I’ve always been fun! I love to have a good time and hang out with friends and family. My favorite thing is a good laugh!!! I mean the kind of laugh when you can barely breathe or speak a word because you are laughing so hard… that’s just the best feeling!
