Meet Dr. Danielle Bailey of 360 Health and Wellness Services in Carrollton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Danielle Bailey.

Danielle, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
During the summer before my senior year in high school, I witnessed my late grandmother suffer from a stroke. This beautiful woman that I always knew to be independent was now in a position in which she was unable to move independently and care for herself. After her hospitalization, she was admitted into a rehabilitation facility for approximately one month. I had the opportunity to journey along with her through the rehab process. Her left side was completely immobile, and I was able to observe how a physical therapist helped her regain her strength, confidence, and independence again. I was extremely grateful and inspired to see how my grandmother’s mobility improved. Through this momentous experience as a teenager, I knew that one day I would want to have the same impact of helping people during a time of great need and desperation.

I pursued my dream by working very hard on my academics in high school and in college. In 2006, I graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where I received a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. After my undergraduate studies, I attended Washington University in Saint Louis, MO and graduated with a doctorate in physical therapy in 2010.

Upon graduation, I have been privileged with the opportunity to gain experience working in several different physical therapy settings including: skilled nursing, home health, pediatrics, out-patient orthopedics, acute care, in-patient rehabilitation, and women’s health.

My interest in women’s health began during my last semester of physical therapy school after shadowing one of my professors who specialized in women’s health. Through this experience, I began to learn about the various types of conditions that were addressed in this specialty practice of physical therapy. Although I had an interest in this area, I never pursued working in women’s health until about four years ago, after a colleague encouraged me to reconsider women’s health. I listened to her advice, and since then have developed an even stronger passion for women’s health.

Last year I decided to further my education at Texas Woman’s University (TWU) in a post-professional women’s health program. This would allow me to learn more about the specialty practice of women’s health, which would help improve my clinical practice and expertise. In May of 2020, I will be completed with the program and am excited about the future endeavors that this program will help me achieve.

This past fall I launched my own physical therapy practice called 360 Health and Wellness Services. My decision was inspired by a desire to provide exceptional, individualized, and customizable health care for every individual. I adopted a cash-based physical therapy practice to maximize the amount of time I believe is necessary for each patient. This is different from a traditional model which can often limit physical therapy visits due to strict health insurance policies. After every physical therapy visit that I provide, patients receive a super-bill which allows them to submit the services rendered that day to their insurance company for reimbursement. Most patients receive a reimbursement for the physical therapy services, however it is contingent upon the patient’s insurance plan and benefits.

Physical therapy services that we provide include women’s health and orthopedics. Additionally, we provide functional medicine and professional counseling. Although we are based out of Carrollton, TX, we deliver unparalleled health care to many people via our in-office, at-home, or Telehealth services. This allows us to serve individuals locally in the Dallas Fort-Worth area and all around the country.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My journey in starting my own business has not been an easy road. In the fall of 2019, my husband and I decided to do a soft launch of the business during a season of our lives that was quite hectic. At that time, I was about five months pregnant, was taking care of my now late grandmother, homeschooling our two toddler children, attending school in a post-professional women’s health program, and working part-time at a hospital. Some people asked me, “why start now during all of the busyness that I had going on?” My response was, “there will never be a perfect time because life is always busy.”

We had some struggles with marketing the business due to how much of our time was vested in other responsibilities. Furthermore, at the end of last year, my grandmother, whom I was providing care for, passed away at the age of 91. Although she lived a long life, her death affected me. She was the matriarch of our family and the inspiration behind why I became a physical therapist. Through my grief and adjustment to the new normal, I began to develop an inner strength that I knew was from her. I decided to reflect on the vision for my business and take the necessary steps to help fulfill those dreams and aspirations. Though I am aware that every goal has its challenges, I look forward to facing those challenges because I know that it will only make me a stronger person.

We’d love to hear more about your practice.
360 Health and Wellness Services was first inspired about 5 years ago after giving birth to our first daughter. I shared with my husband that I had a vision of one day having our own physical therapy practice. I shared with him that a person’s health is full circle, hence the name 360 Health and Wellness Services. The ultimate goal of the company is to address a person’s physical ailments, lifestyle habits, mental health, and spirituality. My husband was so excited about the vision and the name for the company, and we finally executed our goal of launching the business last year.

As a physical therapist, I primarily specialize in women’s health services. This can include conditions such as urinary and fecal incontinence, abdominal pain, constipation, gastrointestinal issues, pelvic pain, and sexual dysfunction. Furthermore, I provide care to women during pregnancy as well as postpartum. Not only do I treat women’s health patients, but I also serve individuals with generalized orthopedic conditions, including chronic joint pain, post-surgical conditions, and acute injuries.

In addition to women’s health physical therapy, we provide functional medicine services. The goal of functional medicine is to treat chronic illness through determining the underlying root cause of why a patient experiences certain symptoms. Many patients that I encounter as a practitioner have other chronic conditions that contribute to their illness which requires in-depth medical attention. Some of these health issues that we address include: joint inflammation, chronic weight gain, hair loss, hormonal issues, skin disorders, chronic pain, blood pressure issues, metabolic conditions, and more. We specialize in customizing patient programs to address “the why” of an individual’s chronic condition. Regardless of the health concern, functional medicine aims to find the root cause of the problem to help patients achieve their desired health goals.

What were you like growing up?
As a young child, my mom always said, “you were so talkative that I was afraid that someone would kidnap you.” I laugh whenever she shares with me how much I enjoyed talking to complete strangers. It didn’t matter the age, gender, socioeconomic status, or nationality. As long as they were people, I would initiate a conversation.

When reflecting on my mom’s stories, I can attest to the fact that, to this very day, I enjoy meeting people. Regardless of their background, I love developing new relationships, learning about other’s interests, and also positively impacting a person’s life. I truly believe that this characteristic has been a strong asset in my career as a physical therapist and a functional medicine practitioner.

Although I enjoy the medical field, I also deeply enjoy the arts. I grew up singing in the church as a pastor’s kid. Throughout my educational years in high school, college, and graduate school, I always enjoyed singing in choirs, ensembles, weddings, and talent shows, and also had opportunities to sing the national anthem at athletic events. My love for the arts and the medical field intersected when I was privileged with the opportunity to represent Nevada in the Miss Black USA pageant in 2012. Overall, these hobbies are a part of who I am as a medical professional, a daughter, a wife, and now a mother of three.
