Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawnette and Johnny Adkins.
Dawnette and Johnny, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always had a passion for cooking for family/friends, exploring new recipes and sharing recipes. We have always hosted parties for family and friends. So, after many discussions and late talks we thought it would be great to someday own a food truck prior to our start. So, we decided to partner with my husband’s friend who also wanted to be a part of a food truck business. Instead of us taking the simple route and buying one, they decided to build a food trailer themselves. When I say from the ground up, it was that, a trailer and wheels only. From that, they built and designed an amazing mobile kitchen. After about almost two years in business together, we decided to end the partnership. My husband and I still had our dream and had also begun developing our catering business which was more focused on our family and hopefully creating a legacy for them to share with their families.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been smooth sailing for us, there have been a few bumps in the road. We have had events when staff were late or did not show up at all after committing to the job. So, I guess you can say not having reliable staff outside of friends and family may be the worse in my opinion. We put in long hours for events because our clients deserve the best food and service and we depend on that staff. It’s also challenging when we both have full-time careers as well. Despite all the hurdles when you love what you do so much you make the time and find a way to make it happen. What I will say, without any struggles or obstacles we would not have had the opportunity to learn and grow from our mistakes, which is something that we try to instill into our children daily
Please tell us about Edible Cravings Catering.
We are a small family-owned catering service company located in Dallas, TX. We service the DFW and surrounding areas and we also travel. Our company is managed and driven by my husband and myself, our teamwork brings a unique, fun and warm dynamics to the table when we meet new clients. We want them to feel as if they are a part of our family. We specialize in Southern and Comfort food cuisines as we say it’s “Comfort food with a modern twist.”
It’s difficult and exciting starting your own business but I must say the proudest moments for us are developing our own company website, creating and designing our company name and logo, and creating our company’s social media pages. I started late in following my passion, but I can say it is never too late to follow your passion and building your dream.
Our focus is to provide our clients with high-quality food, service and customer satisfaction no matter what type of event, it could be a birthday party, bridal/baby shower or reception. We will do everything we can to exceed our client’s expectations and we expect their guests to remember the food for a long time. We believe that preparing our food with love is the bridge to our souls and we take pride in creating and making this happen for you and your guest.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One thing my husband and I both enjoyed as children was having dinner at our Grandmother’s house. For me, it was every day sitting at the kitchen table watching my grandmother cook for everyone, but when Sunday came, it was a different element especially in the summertime! Sunday dinner was the best day ever. It was about having all this amazing food, having your cousins, aunts and uncles all together at one time in one place enjoying and loving each other. So, if you know us or when you get to know us, we often associate food with love, family/friends and having a good time. It is our goal to try and recreate the food we prepare for our clients with the memories we grew up knowing and feeling. We want to connect with all our clientele so that they feel like they are part of our family just like on that Sunday afternoon in the summer.
