Meet Destiny Gibson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Destiny Gibson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Destiny. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It was the worst of times, inwardly I was suffering, BUT God. I remember the first incident when I knew something was seriously wrong. Swollen ankles, eight months pregnant, walking through the campus parking lots, using the second set of keys to look for my husband’s car in the middle of the night. I was so lost. He said he would be back hours ago and I can’t reach his phone! What is going on? Is he hurt? ..Dead? I made phone calls to the hospitals, police stations then finally..the morgue.

Traumatic? I have felt nothing like the sickness of waiting for the person on the other line to go through a list of names of the recently deceased looking for my husband. He resurfaced sometime that next day, still wreaking of alcohol. I was married to an alcoholic combat veteran. For seven years I endured, I hid, I gained weight in excess of 100lbs, and I made excuses until there were none left. I ended up in places I never thought I would. It was a very dark time in my life. I moved in with my parents and kept busy to keep from really acknowledging that my marriage was over. Working full-time, pursuing a Master’s degree full-time, divorced with four beautiful children.

Although I really enjoyed my job, many reasons led to my resignation in April 2018. For a short period of time, I was very angry at my circumstances. I didn’t understand why God would allow this to happen to me? Then, God gave me peace, like only he can. Yes, I was a single mother and it was true I no longer had a job but I had a support system unmatched. I realized God gave me what I always wanted, TIME! Working in Corporate America allowed hardly any time for me to be a parent, especially to four amazing children! I went from asking God WHY to THANKING him! Too often blessings are overlooked because we only see the negative. At that moment I knew God was making a way for me to pursue my dreams and now that I had the faith, it was time for the work!

Has it been a smooth road?
The most critical challenge I had to overcome was my own mindset. There was a point in my life I felt as though I was failing at everything! I had failed at marriage, now I was failing in school, work, with my health and being a mother. I remember crying in the mirror, with disgust in my eyes, for myself! I did not love myself at all and I stopped praying and entered into an internally dark place BUT God.

In order to forgive others, I first had to forgive myself. Trials reveal our true character. It has not been easy at all but the adversity has been a blessing to my character and my faith. I love books, I really do but reading a book about overcoming trials can never replace the strengthening that comes as a result of enduring hard trials and defeating them. I now embrace the challenges and look forward to what it will bring!
