Today we’d like to introduce you to Ebony Peoples-Wordlaw.
Ebony, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Ebony Peoples Events & Design officially launched in January 2011! The brand was born from a love of celebrating life’s unique moments and milestones! What started out as planning events for close family and friends while attending Michigan State University turned into a dream career! As a former elementary school teacher, I take pride in being detail-oriented, catering to each client’s personal style, and learning about the latest trends in the wedding and event industry! Although I was born and raised in the mid-west, I am truly a southern girl at heart! Warm weather, sweet smiles, and soul food provide great inspiration!
Has it been a smooth road?
Although I’ve always been a planner by nature, I am a former elementary school teacher. When I made the conscious decision to leave the classroom and follow my heart, I knew that there would be challenges along the way! Leaving the comfort of a bi-weekly paycheck definitely took some getting used to! As an entrepreneur, I knew that I had to create opportunities to make money while doing what I love! Starting a new business also comes with a price tag! Startup costs (and costs to remain afloat) include working with a graphic designer to create my logo, website, blog, and print materials, workshop/education fees, marketing, and networking! I am a teacher and a planner… I didn’t start out with a knowledge base on how to run a business. This was something that I had to learn. As a business owner, I’ve also had to learn to maintain when business is “slow”, continue to keep my brand fresh and inspiring, and also push creative limits beyond my comfort!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Ebony Peoples Events & Design is a boutique wedding and event planning company where traditional elegance meets modern glam! Whether you’re planning an intimate wedding ceremony for 50 or an over-the-top social celebration for 500, we are here to ensure that your event exudes personal style with exquisite detail and efficient orchestration!
Ironically, Peoples is my (maiden) last name! I am truly a people-person! I take pride in the relationships that I develop with my clients, their families, and other professionals in the wedding and event industry! Consultations and networking over sweet sips at Ascension Coffee or lite bites at Saint Ann have turned into life-long friendships!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Dallas is a great place to start a business in the wedding and event industry! There is always something to celebrate, the city is growing and ever-changing, and there are lots of resources for start-ups! These resources include certification through organizations like AACWP and networking with Thursday Therapy. To someone just starting out, I would suggest that you do your research and truly learn your craft – the creative and the business side of it! Create a brand that represents what you bring to the table! (You should be proud to show off your business!) Make sure you are prepared to take on clients before you start marketing to potentials! Take time to learn the Dallas industry, tour venues, connect with other wedding professionals, and know what/who your target market is!
