Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Moore.
Hannah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I never intended to become a financial planner primarily because I didn’t know it was a career. While at Baylor, I took an Intro to Personal Finance class and fell in love with this idea of helping people through financial planning.
I graduated Baylor in December 2008, which wasn’t the best time to be entering the financial services industry. My first week on the job was the week the market hit its low in March of 2009. Not only was I entering the industry at a tumultuous time, but I was also being primed to be the succession plan for an advisor who was looking to retire.
Four years later, I bought her practice (and several months after that, bought another practice) and had between 250 and 300 clients. It was a great position to be in; I learned so much about what it meant to serve a wide variety of clients. As I continued in my career, I realized that what I was really drawn to was individualized financial planning. I don’t believe a single advisor or planner can work with that many people and offer the level of service I wanted to provide my clients.
When I came to this realization, I opened up my boutique fee-only wealth management firm two and a half years ago.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think anyone’s career path is ever a smooth road! There are quite a few challenges I faced – from buying a business at such a young age to differentiating myself from the typical “salesman.”
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Guiding Wealth Management – what should we know?
I do comprehensive wealth management for families who are nearing retirement.
I strongly believe in a collaborative relationship with my clients. While I may be the financial expert, my clients are the experts on their lives. By working together, I can create a specialized plan applicable to each client’s needs.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Two qualities come to mind immediately – curiosity and creativity.
Being curious has helped propel my career forward. From a technical perspective, curiosity has helped my understanding of complex topics and understanding assumptions. My clients are my greatest teachers and I believe that’s true because I truly am interested and curious on how they approach life and their money.
Approaching my work creatively allows me to think outside the box in how to relate to clients who may not understand finance and numbers the way I do. If a client isn’t understanding a concept or what I’m saying, it’s my job to come up with a better way of sharing the idea. I regularly look to education or other unrelated fields to find connections that will improve the work I do with clients.
