Today we’d like to introduce you to Iris Garza.
Iris, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up seeing my father work in construction made me want to building and designing houses. Playing with dolls never caught my attention as a little girl, instead I was focused on creating drawings and designing houses. By the time I was 11 years old I had drafted my first floorplan. My dad told me the floorplan looked great. I was construction hooked after that, I wanted to build houses…
In 1995 I began working in the Stone & Flooring industry not long after graduated from Wade’s College with a degree in Interior Design. After working for several flooring distributors and a remodeling company as a design consultant, my next goal was to start my own stone and tile Installation Company. I then started Complete Stone Designs which was established in 2001, but because people assumed I sold jewelry I changed the name of the company to Dallas Remodeling Group in 2013.
Dallas Remodeling Group not only specializes in stone and tile, but all interior home remodeling and building new homes. Our first new home was built from the ground up in 2016. My company is also certified as a Woman and Minority owned Enterprise, as well as HUB Certified. These certifications have granted us further opportunities in wining commercial and government project bids.
Has it been a smooth road?
Being a single mom and starting a company has been both a struggle but has also been a good thing for me and my two daughters. Even though I was busy a lot when they were growing up, I feel they learned from me that you have to work hard for what you want and that you CAN reach your dreams, whatever they may be. That to me is a great legacy I am leaving them.
Another struggle has been working in a man dominated industry.There has been numerous instances where people assume I don’t know anything about construction because I am a woman. The awesome thing is the rewarding feeling of accomplishment at the end of a project.
