Today we’d like to introduce you to Isla Altamirano.
Isla, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I first started just growing up playing video games with my brother. It became a bit of a passion of mine and never would have thought of how it would eventually evolve into what it is today, esports. It’s incredible to see how much it’s grown over the past years and I’m excited to see where it will be five to ten years from now. I currently get to work along side of some great companies in the esports industry. From Dallas Mavericks (MavsGaming) to Elohell Esports to Envy Gaming.
Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest struggle for me was when I had to take a risk quitting my secure full time job in the news industry at NBC Universal and completely transition to something that I am truly passionate about. Nothing was guaranteed when I decided to take the big leap but I trusted my mind and I’m glad I did in the end. After all the years of hard work you put yourself through, you get to see that in the end, it was worth your happiness.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I just help out and freelance when I can. I have the great opportunity to work with a lot of ambitious companies and I love it. I never get bored. It is always something new to look forward to as you learn a lot from working with experienced and such wise people in different parts of the industry. I first started off just streaming on Twitch.TV back in 2015 playing Mortal Kombat X simply because I didn’t have friends to play with and never knew what it ended up becoming. I went viral back in 2016 and that was when my life had changed completely. I like to challenge myself. It is neat to see what you can do and what you may want to improve on. EX: I broadcasted for a CSGO tournament on opening weekend and was so unexpected. It opened the doors for more opportunities and recently just hosted a 10K Call of Duty event with IshoniEsports! I like to poke fun and learn different things whether it is the broadcasting side of the behind the scenes and work on the digital media/marketing side as well. My main goal is to simply set a good example for the Latino community especially being a female involved in the industry, which currently is very male-dominated. Wouldn’t it be great to see all of us get along and love gaming all together?
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Dallas has been growing so much over the past couple of years. I am born and Texas raised so it is just a sight to see how much it has grown in my hometown. The esports stadium had just opened in Arlington about a year ago and I highly recommend everyone to go see a tournament and watch what esports is all about! The staff there are so amazing and very informative. I love it. Arlington is growing to become a big entertainment city. As well as Frisco where a lot of game developers and such are located. Dallas is the home of Envy Gaming/Dallas Fuel/Empire. The fact that sports teams such as the Dallas Mavericks also invested in having a 2K league called MavsGamings shows the potential in esports. Hands down Dallas is a growing city in the esports industry.
