Today we’d like to introduce you to Jalisa Keyes.
Hi Jalisa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always lived at the intersection of discipline and creativity.
Music has been present in my life for as long as I can remember — CDs in the car, the radio always on, music videos playing. It wasn’t vinyl or record crates. It was repetition. It was energy. It was learning how music made you feel by hearing it over and over again.
The love for music has always been there.
In college, I was constantly making playlists — for the gym, for studying, for different moods and spaces. I paid attention to sequencing and flow. I didn’t think of it as DJing at the time. I just knew I loved curating sound.
DJing didn’t begin as a business strategy. It began during a season of personal growth — therapy, working through The Artist’s Way, and asking myself a real question: If you weren’t doing what you’re doing, and money didn’t matter, what would you do?
The answer was DJ.
At the time, I wasn’t on Instagram — I didn’t join until 2019. I wasn’t studying trends or thinking about visibility. This came from wanting something creative to learn, something that allowed me to express and develop that part of myself intentionally.
A mentor gave me opportunities to spin. That’s when it expanded.
I began thinking seriously about what it would mean to operate — not casually, but with structure. I started considering branding and identity, and what my name would be. I always knew my DJ name would include “J. Keyes” — that’s what people had called me for years — but I hadn’t yet fully understood the significance of my last name, Keyes, or what it meant to accept the gifts I carry.
Over time, that clarity came.
When it was time to name my business, I wanted something broad enough to hold all parts of me — my ecosystem. That’s how Key Access came to be.
Key Access represents entry — a key to connection, nostalgia, confidence, and presence. It also represents access to me through the art I create. When people book me, they’re not just booking music. They’re booking something powered by purpose and delivered with passion.
Music is medicine.
Whether I’m spinning a private event or a curated community set, my focus is the same: real records, real reactions, real connection.
Today, I balance both worlds — healthcare and music. I don’t see them as separate. Both are forms of service. Both require preparation. Both require integrity. Both require showing up fully.
I’m proud that I’ve built something authentic and sustainable, without chasing trends or hype.
Everything I do is intentional.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Balancing a demanding healthcare career while building a creative business has required discipline at a different level. Time management is not optional. Energy management is not optional. There are seasons where one demands more than the other, and learning how to navigate that without burning out has been a real lesson.
Another challenge has been allowing myself to be multidimensional. People are comfortable categorizing you, either the professional or the creative. I have grown comfortable holding both titles without minimizing either one.
Building a business from scratch meant learning in real time, branding, pricing, contracts, structure, and positioning. I did not come from the music industry or an entrepreneurial background, so I had to navigate much of it through research, lived experience, and discernment. Relationships have also mattered. I have been intentional about building solid connections and maintaining mentors I can reach out to for guidance. I do not forget the people who opened doors for me or paid it forward, and I move with that same awareness.
Operating as a woman in a male dominated DJ space adds another layer. Confidence and assertiveness require composure. Standards require clarity. As I have grown, so has my understanding of my value. That awareness shapes the spaces I step into, the work I accept, and how I structure my business.
I see how quick attention can be rewarded, the visibility, the applause, the immediate reaction. I see how it can feel good in the moment. But I am building something sustainable. Respect, to me, comes from staying rooted in your values and refusing to adjust yourself just to fit what is trending. I am not interested in trading alignment for applause. It is about honoring your higher self and knowing the space you occupy carries meaning, not just movement. When I show up, it is with purpose. It is stewardship. It is using my gifts in service, not for applause. I take up space with intention, not attention. This is a marathon, not a sprint.
The greatest lesson through all of it has been understanding my own ecosystem, recognizing my gifts, refining my strengths, and learning how to nurture and protect them. Staying aligned. Staying centered. Remaining grounded in integrity. Everything I do is powered by purpose and delivered with passion, whether it is music or medicine.
That foundation is what I stand on.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an open format DJ with range. To me, the art of DJing is about adaptability and connection. It is about having a genuine appreciation for a wide spectrum of music, culture, and artistry, and being able to connect with anyone in the room through sound. Range allows me to move across genres and generations without losing authenticity.
What remains consistent is how I approach a set. Flow, feeling, and timing matter. Sequencing matters. How one record transitions into the next emotionally matters just as much as technical execution. The storytelling of the music carries weight.
Sometimes the power is in letting a song breathe. Not every record needs to be sampled, mashed up, or altered. There is strength in honoring the original composition and introducing it in a way that feels fresh and intentional, without taking away from the artist’s original work.
Investment in vinyl is intentional because culture and the art of DJing matter. At the same time, digital tools are embraced for their accessibility and convenience. Being able to move between vinyl sets, digital sets, or a hybrid approach reflects that range. An idea may begin during mixing practice in Serato and then be brought into Serato Studio to refine wordplay, transitions, effects, and structure, fine tuning it until it feels right. Leaning into the producer side of DJing has added another layer of depth to the craft for me. The foundation is solid and multidimensional.
DJing is approached with the same level of focus, precision, detail, and commitment that carried me through earning my doctorate in pharmacy. In healthcare, the right diagnosis informs the right treatment and the right dose produces the right effect. In music, the right record at the right moment creates the right shift in energy. Music is medicine. It is intentional, specific, and responsive. That scientific discipline sharpens how I curate, construct, and deliver every set.
The evolution is what I am most proud of. It began as a thought in my morning pages, then grew into a hobby and creative outlet. As I practiced, refined technique, and deepened the craft, opportunities to spin opened up. Those opportunities influenced a shift in how I saw it. This was not just something I enjoyed. This could be structured as a business for me. Over time, that is what it became, a structured business built for sustainability and longevity.
Key Access is my ecosystem, composed of the Doctor and the DJ where discipline and artistry merge. It reflects range, structure, stewardship, service, purpose, and passion. It embodies alignment, intention, and expression.
Intentional investment has shaped Key Access through customized merchandise, personalized branding, equipment ownership, and production capability. The business is equipped to run full productions, from lighting and cold sparks to fog and sound, without outsourcing. At the same time, the equipment can be rented to others, creating additional streams of income within the business itself.
Infrastructure has been built so the business expands beyond me simply performing sets. Key Access, the brand and artistry, will continue to evolve with sustainability and longevity at the forefront.
Any big plans?
The future is about stewardship, alignment, and expansion.
I am focused on continuing to grow Key Access as both a brand and an ecosystem, stepping into larger and more aligned spaces where the work is intentional and the energy makes sense. Corporate environments that reflect my professional background. Community driven events. Festivals. Fashion, lifestyle, record culture. Any space where good music, good energy, and meaningful connection are valued. The goal is not just bigger rooms, but the right rooms.
Mastery remains a priority. Continuing to refine technique. Learning to scratch with greater fluency. Expanding further into production. Producing my own edits and shaping my sound so that my sets carry a distinct imprint. I have always respected producers for the signature they leave on their work. That level of creative authorship is something I am intentionally developing within myself. Honing my style. Strengthening what makes my approach recognizable. Not for ego, but for depth.
Strategic growth matters. Building patiently. Strengthening business structure so it is positioned for the long term. Seeking opportunities that reflect the value of my preparation, presence, and professionalism. The focus is not volume or visibility for its own sake. It is quality. It is alignment. It is work that honors the level I show up at.
There are no drastic pivots planned. The direction is forward. Bigger rooms. Broader reach. Deeper impact.
More than anything, I remain open. Open to opportunities that align with purpose. Open to growth beyond what I can currently see. Open to God expanding what I steward with obedience and consistency.
Key Access will continue to expand, not just in scale, but in impact.
