Today we’d like to introduce you to Jana Powers.
Jana, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have a psychology degree from UTD and worked in the IT world for 10 years. I found out that the department that I worked for was going to be outsourced and decided that it would be a good time to switch careers to something that was a better fit for my personality. As I began to contemplate what new career I wanted I remembered something had happened to me about 5 years earlier. I was meditating. I asked the Universe to help me understand my purpose. I sat in silence for a while the answer that came back to me very strongly was “you are here to help others heal”. I wrote it down on a corner of a piece of paper and stuck it on my pin board. As this memory surfaced, I went to look and see if that paper was still on my pin board. I dug around and there it was pinned behind a photo. Holding that piece of paper in my hand I knew that was the direction I needed to go. I began looking at my options and decided to go to massage school. Within a week of starting classes, I knew that I had made a great choice for myself, one that fit my gifts and personality much better.
Since getting my LMT license in 2012, I’ve worked for chiropractors and physical therapists and decided in 2015 to work for myself. Three years ago, I went to Belize for Maya Abdominal Massage training. I loved learning about this traditional technique and learning more about reproductive and digestive anatomy. Maya Abdominal Massage has completely transformed my business from primarily a therapeutic massage focus to a more holistic approach to feminine health.
Maya Abdominal massage can help with most female reproductive issues from painful cycles to fibroid, ovarian cysts and infertility. I also offer v-steams, a treatment where a woman sits over a steaming bowl of therapeutic herbs, cleansing and stimulating healing to the womb.
I also have training in energy healing to help women heal from emotional wounds that can manifest physically. For example, a woman in a relationship that requires her to bite her tongue and close down parts of herself in order to keep the peace can manifest as adhesion in the abdomen that feel like small bbs. This tension can slow down the blood flow into the pelvis and reproductive organs causing issues such as endometriosis and fibroids and inhibit fertility.
I am now offering a v-steam session that is geared toward women going through a breakup, ready to start dating or moving on after a divorce. It includes a v-steam, a mini abdominal massage, and a guided meditation which walks them the process of letting go of soul connections to past lovers that can remain long after the relationship ends. I call it the Recover from Romance session.

Has it been a smooth road?
I started my business at the same time as going through a divorce. The chiropractor’s office that I was working at full time suddenly closed about a week after my ex-husband moved out. I made the decision to start my own business instead of getting another full-time massage job working for someone else. So many big decisions, healing from the end of a 14-year marriage, learning about running a small business, and helping the kids adjust. It was overwhelming at times. I knew that I was on my right path and that gave me huge amount of comfort even when things were not east or running smoothly.
One of my other challenges is having a son with special needs, he is 14 but developmentally more like 5 or 6. He is an amazing kid, loves to sing and play. He is one of my greatest teachers and has taught me so much about unconditional love. He has humbled me and pushed me to my limits. It’s been a wild ride with him. He is about to start high school in the fall and that blows my mind. He loves to get massages by the way.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Moon Balance Healing Arts story. Tell us more about the business.
There are several unique things about Moon Balance Healing Arts that makes me proud. First, there are very few Arvigo Maya Abdominal Massage practitioners in Dallas. I was the first one and there a few more since then. In fact, most massage therapists do not touch the abdomen at all. So much of are vital organs and health in general stems from abdomen. People can benefit from the improved blood flow that even basic massage can offer. With my specialized training, I have helped clients get pregnant, avoid surgery for fibroids or cysts, have healthy pain-free cycles. So much is possible with this massage.
I am also proud of my focus on the whole woman, body and soul. I teach woman about their anatomy and cycles and how to work with them and take better care of their bodies and emotions.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see a growth of interest in alternative and holistic health field. I think women are doing their own research and finding alternative answers their health issues. I would love to see women have more options for reproductive issues that include non-invasive techniques like massage and acupuncture before surgery and heavy-duty drugs with lots of side effects are suggested. I also see people are more aware of energy work and how it can benefit them.
