Today we’d like to introduce you to Gianna.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am actually currently a senior Baylor student majoring in Psychology, living in Waco. But I travel often to Irving and Austin, TX for my creative ventures. Art has always been a big piece of my life since I was a child. I kind of grew up in my parent’s gas station watching them work hard daily, so I’d escape the mundane lifestyle through creative expression – drawing. It wasn’t until I was around some friends in high school who freestyled over YouTube beats that I got inspired to write music actually. I never took it seriously though, the idea of being an artist was so amazing to me, I didn’t think I could ever do it. When I came to Baylor in 2017, I made a friend who was a SoundCloud artist, and as I showed him the music I had written, he pushed me to record with him at the library’s recording studio. It was life-changing when I heard myself through the speakers. I too, became a SoundCloud artist.
But, I eventually wanted more and to chase my dreams. Why not? So I kept working on my craft, writing more, recording at the library. In late 2018, I saved up to buy my own studio equipment. In the beginning of 2019, I released my first song on all streaming platforms, “Pull Up.” The response was incredibly supportive and it only reassured me of my passion for this dream. Only, this time, I felt my first sprouts of confidence budding. And I’ve been going hard ever since. Being stuck in Waco though, I had to rely on social media for a lot of networking, and it’s honestly opened so, so many doors for me. I’ve established my whole team through Instagram DM’s and genuine connections. I’m so excited to see what’s in store for me in the next few years.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. Though, I can say it has been smoother than many other artists’ stories. I’d say the hardest thing for me is my perfectionism and confidence. I’m more confident than I’ve ever been in my life, but that’s because it took work to get where I am mentally. I know I grew up being shy and lacking high self-esteem, but those don’t define me even though they are a part of me. I realize I’m much more than that, and I want to break those walls down to be who I want to be. I want to never doubt myself. Unfortunately, my perfectionism comes into play as well. I think every creative has this tendency to some degree. Creatives get high bursts of inspiration, then lows of lack of inspiration. The same thing happens with my music and it can be very frustrating when I just want to be on a roll.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I am an R&B artist, DJ, songwriter, and fine artist. Firstly I am Gianna, an R&B artist and songwriter. I enjoy DJing in my free time, it was always something I wanted to learn how to do. As for my fine artist side, I grew up drawing and considered going to art school at one point.
I think I am mostly known as an R&B artist. Some of my most popular tracks are “You” and “Beleave Me (Don’t).” I am most proud of my songs and versatility. I’m so proud to be a first-generation Korean American graduating soon with my Bachelor’s degree. My parents work exceedingly hard to support me, to have a better life. I think my passion and versatility set me apart. I have A&R/DJ ears, the eyes of a drawer, the mind of a scholar, the passion of a hungry artist.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Eating homemade dinners with my family. My mom’s an incredible cook and being able to spend a period of time with both of my parents not working was everything to me, I’m very grateful.
