Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Borjas.
Mary, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
About 10 years ago I started working at Orange Salon as an assistant. I apprenticed under 16 artistic hairstylist! They are known for their talents in different popular magazines. During that time I picked up many hair techniques that include; cutting, coloring, highlighting and smoothing. Assisting for a year and a half it taught me how to listen, watch and be creative.
Soon after I transition into leasing my station and building my own clientele. It was a roller coaster as our neighborhood was on one as well. I have seen new stylist come and go. Some after four to five years just want new walls. Orange has been at its lowest and back at the best. As my goal of staying at Orange for so long, I wanted to take over. Which is where I am now!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think for any owner of a business, there is never a smooth road. At times it can be steady with lots of bumps. One of my main struggles with taking over was rebuilding clientele for Orange Salon. Our neighborhood wasn’t doing so well then it became a challenge. Hiring new hairstylists was difficult as well. I think a lot of patience and knowing what you want for your salon helps.
Orange Salon – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Orange is a small, warm, retro, high-end salon. I specialize in many different services there. I would rather say haircuts and blowout styles is what I’m known for. I am a proud Owner that works hard and took a lot of personal and family time away to get where I’m at today. What makes me apart from others is that I was able to stick around and not leave Orange Salon when challenges became hard.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is watching and learning from others. Putting all in and going for what you believe in. Listening and always knowing that no matter how old you are or how many years you have in a field. You are always going to learn something new and create out of it.
