Today we’d like to introduce you to Meghna Joshi.
Meghna, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Ever since I was a little girl, I knew I always wanted to become a doctor “when I grew up”. Both of my parents were doctors and I wanted to be like them. As I grew up, the desire to become a doctor stayed with me as I joined various clubs in high school and volunteer activities. I enjoyed being part of something bigger and helping people. I took a psychology class in high school and fell in love with it and ended up majoring in it in college. Being part of organizations that helped others, like Amnesty International and Alpha Phi Omega, a co-ed service fraternity was fun and fulfilling. I knew I really wanted to help people but wasn’t sure how until medical school, were during my 3rd-year medical school rotations, I found my calling…the fusion of medicine and psychology. I truly enjoyed waking up and going to my psychiatric clinic sites during that rotation, and found my love for working with children during that and other rotations. It is a truly joyful and rewarding experience to see how much some of my patients progress through the years.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Some of the struggles along the way were the long study hours during medical school and the early mornings and long work days with many weeks with over 12-hour workdays and one day off during the weekends. That coupled with my long-distance relationship with my now husband, did take a toll on me. Then during psychiatry internship and residency training, there were board exams to take as well as trying to balance family and work. During child and adolescent fellowship training, I had my first child, and that was challenging trying to work full time, study for boards, and be there for my family as well. Now after 4 yrs of college, 4 yrs of medical school, 4 yrs of psychiatry residency, 2 yrs of child & adolescent psychiatry fellowship, and 5-7 moves during that time, I can still honestly say it was worth it!
Please tell us about Child Psychiatry of Dallas.
My business, Child Psychiatry of Dallas, is an outpatient child and adolescent psychiatry clinic. A big part of my job is diagnosis and treatment of patients. Treatment can be with medications, therapy or both; other times patients are referred to therapy or other types of treatments or testing as indicated.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have definitely tried to develop good study habits early on! Time management skills and organization are super important and learning them earlier would have helped better prepare for me for medical school and my career, as well as in my home life with my kids! On the flip side, life was simpler back then and I did things differently, I would have tried to have more fun and enjoy the moment!
