Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael de Cardenas.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Michael. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
While working as a regulatory coordinator for a medical research company in Tampa, Florida, I realized I couldn’t stand my job and was only working for the weekends. I had no idea what I would do instead, I just knew I wanted to be my own boss.
Then, an opportunity presented itself with Nutrishop. I had always been a huge fan of my local Nutrishop versus other supplement stores purely because of the high level of customer service I received each time I visited. After praying hard about it with my wife, we decided to take the risk and take ownership of a Nutrishop all the way over in Fort Worth, Texas!
Our mission at Nutrishop is to provide each person who walks through our doors with as much value as possible. We do this by implementing free product sampling, free body composition scans, free meal plans and free nutritional guidance. We don’t focus on up-selling, but instead cater each interaction to each individual’s personal goals. We do our best to ensure they have all the information they need so they can reach their health and fitness goals.
I believe this mindset, in addition to our hard work, is why we’ve been so successful. We are now one of the top Nutrishop stores in the country.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely not. We took over in April 2018 and those first few months were some of the hardest of my life. I was constantly bombarded with these negative thoughts, feelings of regret and uncertainty, and weekly anxiety attacks. I was losing clumps of hair due to all the stress!
We were growing fast but not as fast as I had hoped. I felt so exhausted working 90+ hours a week. There was one thing I kept telling myself, “tenacity despite failure.” I was not going to stop until the store was successful. It wasn’t until the birth of my daughter, Valentina when things became clearer. I realized I had to start delegating and trusting my staff or I wouldn’t make it. Luckily, we were blessed when God brought Carl into our lives.
Carl is our general manager now and he has been my right-hand man since May of last year. We didn’t know this until a few weeks after we hired him, but we actually lived about five minutes from each other in Tampa, FL! It’s crazy how God works. If it wasn’t for him, the shop wouldn’t be where it is today.
Bottom line is after I shifted my mindset and started letting go some, the shop starting growing. Plus, we are ALWAYS consistent with our original mission of providing as much value as possible to everyone who comes in.

I own the Nutrishop located in Alliance Town Center in north Fort Worth. We specialize in helping people achieve their personal health and wellness goals. Our primary focus is ensuring that our customers have all the tools and information they need to be able to reach their goals. We have our customers do a free InBody composition scan, which provides us with invaluable information to get started on a plan of action to help them towards their goals.
The InBody scan measures water weight, skeletal mass, body fat percentage, lean muscle mass and Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). This information helps us create personalized meal plans based on each customer’s goals. We don’t do cookie-cutter plans because we know everyone is different. Then we write suggestions on what support products they should take based on their goals. All staff are certified sports nutritionists and are extremely knowledgeable about all the products we carry.
I’m very proud of the unique culture and family-based community we’ve developed over the past year. It is such a blessing to see how much our #nutrishopfamily has grown, especially after we introduced transformation challenges. If you had to start over, what would you have done differently?
I would be more patient with the process and not worry so much about things that are out of my control. The factors that were out of my hands took up way too much real-estate in my head. It literally did me no good to obsess over these things. At the end of the day, me stressing out or freaking out about a “slow” day did nothing to better my business or me on a personal level.
