Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalee Cunningham.
Hi Natalee, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Doing hair has always been a passion for me. It came very natural to care for my own hair and others. I have always known just how to make it look and feel its best. I always imagined going to cosmetology school to, but I had to find a way to do it and support myself financially. During the pandemic, I finally made the decision to just step out and pursue doing hair. I did not have much of a plan on how I was going to do it or even how it would work out. I just knew this is what I wanted to do and I was going to do it. It was not easy, it took a lot of dedication, reminders, and consistency. So, I jumped right into it and created my own lane. At the time I made this decision, I was working for American Airlines full time from 9 am to 5 pm, so I put in a request to go back to being a flight attendant to give me the flexibility to go to cosmetology school full time. After getting that approved, I was able to begin attending Aveda Arts Institute. While traveling for work, and attending school full time, I began doing hair on the side, building up my clientele out of my home.
Shortly after I obtained my cosmetology license, I made the decision to move into a private suite and I then began taking clients full time and building my brand.
Since beginning my journey I have always specialized in Healthy Silk Presses which I have been able to perfect. I took multiple silk press courses from various Seasoned Hairstylists. I have recently added Microlink Installs to my services after taking multiple courses as well. I have always been dedicated to giving my clients an intimate and a bit of luxury experience even when I was working from my home. I want my clients to feel comfortable and at ease while sitting in my chair so that they are able to share their hair struggles and goals with me while having a glass of wine. Before my clients leave, I make sure they receive home care knowledge and product recommendations that will help them at home.
Overall, it was not easy. It took a lot of dedication, reminders of why I started, discipline, autopilot modes, and just having faith that it will all work out in my favor to get where I am today.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I am a full-time mom, a full-time Hairstylist, and a Flight Attendant. This journey definitely has its ups and downs but I can honestly say more ups than downs. I struggled with my books not being full coming straight out of Cos school and moving into my private suite. I had fear of not being able to cover my suite rent, providing an experience for clients, and just overall the overhead. Some days I thought I was in over my head then there will be days where I received confirmation that I am on the right path. All to say, there will be ups and downs, the road will not always be smooth, you may have to go a different direction but, in the end, you will always end up where you are supposed to.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a licensed Cosmetologist. I specialize in Healthy Hair Care with providing Silk Presses on all textured hair types. I am most proud of the way I continue to care for the health of my client’s hair no matter what direction the beauty industry is going. Healthy Hair will always come first and will always be in style. What I believe sets me apart from others can be just the way I genuinely show interest, provide quality service and care for the health of clients’ hair.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I have been living in Dallas for 3 years now. I love that there’s a little bit for everyone depending on what you are into. So many different activities, food options, living areas, and amazing schools. I can say, it is a good medium for me. There is not much I can say that I dislike about Dallas. I honestly feel a bit spoiled here and I love it!
