Meet Nathan Peterson of OCD and Anxiety Counseling in Allen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Peterson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Nathan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up, my mother ran a private practice providing counseling services in our home. I remember coming home from school and looking into my living room where there may be someone waiting for their appointment. Often, I would go in the room and start talking to them. I felt as if this started my path. Throughout my life, many have told me how easy it is to talk to me. In fact, a very common phrase I would hear is “I don’t know why I’m telling you all of this.” People would tell me things about themselves that they don’t talk to others about. Even if they didn’t know me very well.

I knew I wanted to help people. This felt like becoming a therapist or counselor was a calling. This is something that wasn’t a question in my mind but was something that I needed to do. I have been working in the social work field for over 12 years. Seeing clients and working through various issues has been my passion. Within the past few years, I have spent time honing my skills specifically towards working with an underserved population. The focus I have taken is to work with obsessive-compulsive disorder, hair pulling, skin picking, tics and Tourette’s, and PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections).

I absolutely love working with these disorders because the treatment is very structured. The guesswork is minimal. Individuals can have very real results if they are willing to put in the work. I recently have moved from Utah where I assisted in opening a treatment center there. My wife and I decided it is time to get out of the cold and bring my specialized skills to a new location. Texas felt like the place to be. We have lived here a little less than a year.

Currently, I run a private practice where I can use these skills to help those in the community.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been a long journey to get to where I am today. Years of schooling. Lots of different jobs and figuring out what I enjoy and what I do not.

OCD and Anxiety Counseling – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My entire practice is unique from top to bottom. My personality, my training, and my perspective, all the way to the unique approaches I take and the constant innovations I bring. Focusing on children, teens, adults, and couples; dealing with conflict, stress, and general discord in their lives. I utilize an open, honest, and relaxed style, and sessions are focused on a therapeutic framework that best suits them. I specialize in OCD, anxiety, hair pulling, skin picking, tics and Tourettes, PANDAS, depression, grief, anger, addictions, eating disorders, and pornography addiction.

Taking an account and working on the issues affecting your mood and functioning as well as to promote concrete changes in your life. I want someone to not only feel better but to create a lifelong change. A lot of therapists just want to talk about the issues. While I think this is great. I also believe individuals need to take action and work for the change they are looking for. I’m the guy to keep you accountable.

What sets me apart from others are my specialities. According to iocdf.org, there are only 13 specialists for obsessive-compulsive disorder in a 25-mile radius. I am proud of the successes that I see and the life-changing treatment that I can provide. Typically, the treatment I provide is exposure and response prevention, the comprehensive model for behavioral treatment (ComB) for hair pulling and skin picking, the cognitive behavioral intervention for tics (CBIT) and cognitive behavioral therapy.

I currently provide services to ages eight years old and above.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success on if somebody is using treatment strategies to their benefit. Somebody may come in my door and state that they still feel anxious or depressed. While I know this is important, I also want to know if they are using the strategies successfully or not. Pinpointing those little periods of time where they may not feel anxious or depressed. I know that if somebody’s able to use treatment strategies successfully, they will see results. Since we live in a world of instant gratification, sometimes this is very difficult for others to identify. This is why at the beginning I’m only concerned about providing quality therapy so that the individual understands it well enough to do it at home.
