Today we’d like to introduce you to Nurisha Liggins.
Hi Nurisha, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born in Oakland, California to Isaiah and Betty Liggins. My father was in the Air Force, and we moved to Fort Worth when I was almost three years old, so the DFW is most like “home” for me. As a musician at an early age, I decided to pursue a career in the music industry and enrolled in a Music & Video Business degree program at the Art Institute of Dallas. After earning my degree, I began a very successful career in my field, working at multiple DFW based radio stations, such as WBAP, KHVN, V100, The OASIS, and even Radio Disney.
I also began a record label with some close friends and later managed a few well-known artists and musicians. I really enjoyed the music industry, and I soon found myself being offered a position for one of my favorite gospel artists at the time. I became the Director of Marketing & Public Relations for Grammy Award-winning Fred Hammond and got the opportunity to travel the world and do what I loved. Then disruption came. The job ended and I was left to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. My passion for the music industry had dried up and I wasn’t sure what I was supposed to do with my unique degree and set of skills and talents. Divine intervention soon came and I was inspired to write a book, a devotional entitled “Living the Light” which was published in 2010. This lead me into a series of jobs in executive ministry, where I oversaw congregations large and small and even wrote and taught curriculum to those I served. I also invested time teaching diversity and inclusion, and I also launched my own mentorship program for women, helping them to discover their purpose and prepare them for the life they desired to live.
In 2017, I began working for American Airlines and soon found myself facilitating unconscious bias courses for our team members all over the world. When the pandemic came, the travel industry was severely impacted, and I was forced into deciding if I should risk staying or take an early-out package that would help me transition out of the industry with some footing. I made the decision not to risk being laid off without support and decided to launch a faith-based Diversity & Inclusion company with my friend and business partner called DEI Consulting and Training Solutions, which focuses on consulting and facilitating training for ministries, corporations and educational institutions. I am now a Certified Life Coach, and I enjoy my practice which allows me to pour into the lives of people as they navigate through transition and overcome unique challenges in their personal and professional lives. I also recently published my second book in July 2020 called “From Tools To Traits.” “From Tools To Traits” is a personal and spiritual development guide helping you become the person you want to be most remembered for. In addition to all of this, I host workshops and conferences (virtually right now) that help people understand and uncover their purpose and navigate through The PAUSE seasons of life. The PAUSE seasons are the transitional times we enter by way of life’s disruptions, which help to steer our lives into where we are exactly supposed to be.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. I have lived through 5 PAUSE seasons where disruption caused me to reinvent and rediscover myself. Each time, it was dark, lonely and confusing. I liken it to a caterpillar entering a cocoon, no longer having access to the people and provision of your previous identity, and uncertain of what is to come. The PAUSE seasons can some by way of a divorce, death, new direction, disaster, depression, etc. I experienced all of these, but I endured each season, learning more about who I really am and discovering all that I have inside of me. Disruption isn’t easy but if we are willing to go the process, we do come out better each time.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an Author, Speaker, DEI Professional and Certified Life Coach. I specialize in helping others navigate and grow in various aspects of their personal and professional life. One of my specialties is guiding people through seasons of transition and reinvention. I thoroughly enjoy helping others understand their gifts, talents and calling, and knowing which ones they are to focus on right now. I also enjoy consulting ministries by helping them transition into the marketplace, where they share their message in profitable forms outside of the church. As a faith-based DEI Professional, I help churches and ministries cultivate a culture for oneness and belonging through specialized training and consulting. I believe that what sets me apart from others is my passion. I truly desire to see people walking fully in their purpose, free from the bondages which blind us to the greatness which is inside of us.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Leading, teaching and playing piano for the gospel choir at my high school, Southwest High School in Fort Worth, Texas. This opportunity really helped shape and prepare me for leading others. This also gave me a glimpse into the music industry at a very early age, and uncovered a passion for the business of the music industry.
