Today we’d like to introduce you to Patsy Gallian.
Patsy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
At the age of 12, my mother passed away from breast cancer, and I vividly remember my father sitting at a table in our home trying to make sense of all the medical bills they had received. At that moment I knew that I wanted to help others in my father’s position and to help relieve some of the stress from families who have been impacted by cancer. This realization eventually blossomed into a successful career in the medical reimbursement industry, specifically in the sub-field of Oncology. Over the years I have worked for numerous medical facilities and companies that focus on cancer treatment, and I have been able to mold her career and skills around my passion for Oncology. On a daily basis, I use her plethora of skills in medical billing to ensure the billing process is as stress-free and efficient as possible. This allows me to work as a patient advocate and also as a way to give back to the community by helping families and individuals in their time of need.
I graduated from Colorado Technical University with a Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management and hit the ground running. From my first professional position in her field, I have been able to accomplish many significant achievements and have been able to go above and beyond throughout my career. Between 2005-2007 I worked as the Site Administrator for a Medical Management organization here in Dallas and managed all aspects of operation and reimbursement for the radiology imaging centers at multiple locations. During my time there I was able to significantly reduced accounts receivable days from 74 to 55 in just four months. I began working with an Oncology practice and over the course of two years as Business Office Manager where I was responsible for resolving any issues within the Revenue Cycle process and improved overall performance. My most significant accomplishments include: increasing the revenue and decreasing debt while simultaneously improving patient service in a cancer center; and she increased the referral volume by 3% by strengthening client and doctor relationships.
Over the next six years of my career as Senior Revenue Cycle Manager with Frisco-based Specialty Pharmacy, I was in charge of managing a $75 million accounts receivable specialty pharmacy portfolio. I also maintained government purchase orders to ensure timely and accurate billing cycles. In this role, I gained additional expertise in various types of billing and collection including: Major Medical, PBM, Medicare A/B, DME and part D. Over the next several years I worked for several companies in Texas where she ensured revenue maximization through timely and accurate billing, managed an entire reimbursement line, oversaw accounts receivable, and integrated policies and procedures to ensure all the companies’ processes related to billing were compliant with regulations.
As of April 2018, Revivify Revenue Cycle Consulting was founded, as a full-service healthcare revenue cycle company. I knew that I wanted to be an advocate for patients and family members that are sick and suffering. I did accomplish this by becoming a bridge between the healthcare provider, patient, and the insurance company. After 25 years of corporate experience in this field, I wanted to more directly impact patient/clients lives. My passion for quality healthcare that embodies my core values without compromising the bottom line has lead to my new business.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This has not been a smooth road; there are so many elements to forming your own business. I have run into struggles along the way; one is that when I began to forming my business, I was still working full-time. This posed a problem with time and time management. I felt that I was working 2-full-time jobs, and still have the responsibility of the home and my husband. I have had to reset timelines several times, so as to achieve all that is needed, this is something that I continue to do until today.
As of June 2018, one of my struggles was alleviated, I was laid off!. I could have takes this one of two ways, as a defeat or as an opportunity to devote more time to the creation of my business. I took the second option and proceeding full steam ahead. I joined a women’s empowerment group, Women’s Empowerment Collective. Their slogan is “I’m Possible,” and they strive to develop solutions for women in business by creating a collaborative and supportive network of successful women with whom they can build skills, ideas, and creative solutions. The group strives to develop leaders who can then take their expertise and help other women in the business industry achieve their potential.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
While the company covers many different areas of medical billing, we specialize in medically-induced hair loss and cranial hair prosthesis (wigs) billing. Most of our services offered are directed towards the billing practice surrounding medically-induced hair loss.
Losing hair for some people can strip them of something that makes them unique, and gives them a sense of identity. The company name came from what it truly means to revivify someone’s life. To revivify means to “give new life or vigor to” – just as the company gives to patients. On another level, the company is working to revivify the whole billing process, making it easier and more accessible to those who encounter it.
Many people don’t know that cranial hair prosthesis is covered by most health insurance if the hair loss is due to a medically induced reasons such as:
Alopecia
Chemotherapy
Radiation
Thyroid
Kidney
Cancer
Cranial hair prosthesis falls under the category of DME (durable medical equipment), which goes through a special, and somewhat complicated, process of billing. For this reason, it is often difficult for individuals to understand and often bypass this process in order to get a wig covered by their insurance. As such, Revivify Revenue Cycle Consulting team use their specialized tools and years of knowledge to help people get what they need from the process.
RRCC partners with hair salons and stylists to provide people with cranial hair prosthesis after medically induced hair loss. Hair loss is a very personal and devastating thing for some people, especially when coupled with the often severe medical trauma they are enduring. When a complicated billing process and unforgiving insurance policy stand in the way of remedying this loss, it can make a bad experience even worse. We stand to enforce ethical medical billing and help people get what they are entitled to from their health plan. RRCM will become their advocate with the health insurance company by researching the following with their health plan:
1. Insurance benefit investigation- call the insurance company to ensure that cranial hair prosthesis is a cover
benefit of their plan
2. If prior authorization is required, we will complete this for the client
3. Filing of claim, appealing any denials
4. Coordinate with the insurance carrier for payment of the claim
What were you like growing up?
I had to laugh and think back when I read this question. Growing up I was very much a tomboy; my interests were marbles, baseball and anything outside. I did grow up relatively fast due to my mother being ill and I was the oldest, but we held it together. My father remarried a very wonderful woman that took excellent care of my siblings and I, and for this, we are forever grateful and we love her so much.
