Today we’d like to introduce you to Shiva Boecker.
Shiva, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started Martial Arts when I was 18. I was overweight and had no confidence. I never did team sports, but wanted to change my way of life. I wanted to be healthy and fit. I saw an ad in our high school newspaper for kickboxing. Driving home from school, I drove past the gym I saw the ad for. I called them when I got home and scheduled a trial session. I tried the class and fell in love. Shortly after starting classes, I saw results. It was the first sport I found that I loved and looked forward to going to, and it made me feel really good.
My instructor at that time is now my husband. He grew his company to 8 locations. I graduated college with a degree in biology, but ended up running one of his gyms. He sold his company in November 2013 and I opened RockStar in January 2014.
Has it been a smooth road?
The first year was the hardest. I did things differently in my business than how my husband did in his, so we butted heads. I also was never home. I’d leave the house at 6am to go to work and wouldn’t get home until 10pm. I was a control freak and wanted everything done perfectly, so I did everything myself. Since then, I’ve learned to trust and delegate certain things.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We have classes for both kids and adults starting at 3 years old. With the kids, we focus on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and self-defense. A huge part of the kids program is character development. We work closely with parents at home and teachers at school to help them achieve the goals they are there for, whether it’s confidence or discipline. We get raving reviews from parents. For our adults, we offer both Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The coaches for each of these classes trained under the top Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu coaches in all of North America. They are experts at teaching and motivating their students.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Dallas and surrounding cities is the perfect place to start a gym. It seems we are becoming more health conscious. There are many companies moving their headquarters here, hence numerous families moving to the area from other states.
