Meet Trailblazer Natalie and Sarah Knowlton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie and Sarah Knowlton.

Sisters, Sarah and Natalie Knowlton, are the founders of WE THE BIRDS, a lifestyle brand and luxury French macaron bakery. They established their brand through a shared love of fashion, design, travel and French macarons. They grew up living all over the world, moving over 17 times and living in many countries including: Singapore, Australia, Venezuela, Cambodia, Thailand, France and, of course, the US of A. Their personal style and global perspective is a reflection of their transient upbringing. Their goal is to establish WE THE BIRDS as an outstanding source of inspiration in the creative community.

Has it been a smooth road?
Anyone who says “starting a business is easy” is lying. It is one of the biggest challenges we’ve ever taken on — but also the most rewarding.

We struggle daily with juggling the 2 separate businesses under WE THE BIRDS. We are constantly trying to find ways to split our time effectively and make sure we are working efficiently. This will likely always be a challenge for us given the nature of our business and the different streams of revenue.

Our advice to women starting out:

Natalie: Practice your craft! Practice builds confidence — you will need that confidence to take the inevitable leaps in the future. Fear is an unavoidable part of entrepreneurship. I battle fear constantly, but I found that the more I made my macarons, honed my skills and defined our product, the more confident I became! That confidence (built over time) is what led me to have the courage to leave the “safety” of my full-time job and pursue WE THE BIRDS 100%.

Sarah: JUST DO! I always tell people to “just do”… it sounds really rudimentary and obvious but I believe “action” is the defining trait of entrepreneurs — EVERYONE has good ideas… but few people actually take action. Obviously, “just do” is the beginning… you don’t want to spin your wheels, working your butt off doing things, but not really getting anywhere — you’ll have to constantly hone and work on efficiencies along the way — BUT if you’re just starting? JUST DO 😉

We’d love to hear more about WE THE BIRDS.
WE THE BIRDS, founded on our shared love of fashion, design, travel and French macarons, houses two businesses: WE THE BIRDS | Studio and WE THE BIRDS | Macarons. We offer services akin to those of a boutique creative agency, producing one-of-a-kind editorial content for our partners. Additionally, WE THE BIRDS offer our partners the ability to market their products on our platform leveraging WE THE BIRDS’ established reach and dedicated following.

WE THE BIRDS | Macarons — a luxury French macaron bakery that specializes in custom orders, gifts and catering events. Handcrafted in Dallas, TX. Nationwide shipping coming VERY soon…

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
Moving around, as much as we did, was not always easy (imagine being the “new kid at school” over 15 times)… but there’s no question that we learned a slew of invaluable life lessons from our transient upbringing. Most notably, we learned to be resilient — to make mistakes, learn from them and try again. We were insanely fortunate to live in many countries, which gave us an international, global perspective and the ability to appreciate cultural differences as well as the basic similarities that make us all human.

We had a very strong mother figure, which we believe molded us into the women we are today. Our mother was the glue that kept our family together in the face of constant change. She always transformed a new house into our “home”. She made sure we were staying on track with our education. She encouraged us to be independent thinkers and supported our unique individual journeys. She made sure we knew that “we can do anything we put our minds to”. And most of all, she was our constant — she was always there.
