Rising Stars: Meet Lauren Ramsey, Md Mba of Fort Worth, Texas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Ramsey, Md Mba

Hi Lauren, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
In 2022, I lost a friend and medical school classmate to breast cancer. My friend was an orthopedic surgeon, a specialty with significant occupational radiation exposure, which is a known risk factor for breast cancer. After this, I began to research cancer rates in healthcare workers exposed to radiation. The facts were alarming, with female orthopedic surgeons having 3x higher rates of breast cancer. One major factor is that the current standard protective apron does not adequately protect the breast from radiation.

As a breast cancer surgeon, I was inspired to created the BAT™, an innovative radiation protection garment designed to safeguard the Breast, Axilla, and Thyroid, with the goal of reducing the risk of breast cancer and other radiation-associated cancers in healthcare workers. BAT reduces radiation to the breast by over 97%, as well as decreasing exposure to the thyroid, chest, and spine.

Launched in October 2024, the BAT has been purchased by hospitals in 28 states. International launch occurred in February 2025. My goal is that the BAT becomes a new global standard in radiation protection and will be available in all hospitals as an option for healthcare workers who want to reduce their risk of breast cancer.

The BAT is made in the USA and is available for purchase through Burlington Medical, the global leader in radiation protection.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of our biggest challenges was coming up with the perfect design for the BAT. We wanted to make sure that the BAT not only provided significant protection from radiation, but also was lightweight and comfortable for healthcare providers to wear. Designing the BAT took several months of pattern and prototype development to make sure it achieved all of our goals.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I feel that my strong work ethic has helped contribute to my success as a surgeon and entrepreneur. Both of these endeavors have required long hours, dedication and persistence. As a surgeon, I am committed to providing the best possible care to my patients. As an entrepreneur, I have been committed to turning my vision of the BAT into reality and getting it into the hands of healthcare providers globally.
