Today we’d like to introduce you to Savannah Sweeting.
Hi Savannah, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Something Sweet started with the encouragement of my friends and family. While I grew up baking and cooking, my passion/interest hit an all-time high during the pandemic. As a way to stay encouraged and connected, I began making cookie “care packages” for my friends. Soon cookies became cupcakes, pound cakes, etc.
On Christmas Day of 2020, my partner gifted me my first Kitchenaid mixer and told me: “it’s time to make this into a business.” Even though I wasn’t entirely sure where to even start, I remember thinking of my father and how, after every meal, he’d say, “now I just need something sweet.” It was at that moment that it clicked; my business name would be “Something Sweet” in honor of my father.
I hit the ground running creating a menu and continually creating content of my baking. When I wasn’t working, I was baking, and eventually, people started seeing more of my work and supporting me. I’ve been extremely lucky to have friends and customers who refer me, repost my work on their platforms, and encourage me daily to keep pursuing my passion.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting a business is never easy! It comes with its own unique sets of challenges, but it is also so rewarding to be your own boss! I would say some of the struggles I faced were self-doubt and even imposter syndrome. I’ve never had any type of pastry/culinary education. This alone led me to feel inadequate in terms of being a “real” baker.
However, I believe it is important to remember we all start somewhere. My “culinary education” came from watching my grandma cook and Food Network marathons with my father. Interestingly enough, some of my most loved desserts are from recipes that have been in my family for generations. It just goes to show that sometimes we are our own worst critics.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I love to call myself an unapologetic sweet tooth/ dessert enthusiast! I genuinely just love to bake and create desserts that make people feel good. I feel like most people know me for my pound cakes (Peach Cobbler. Butter Pecan, etc.) I really enjoy taking classic Southern flavors/desserts and combining them with pound cake to create a new type of dessert. I am really proud that I am able to share the recipes I grew up with other people. I genuinely feel like I am able to make my father and grandparents proud every time I share my food with others.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Determination. Hands down, I would say determination. I never fully understood the saying “you’ll hear a lot of nos before you get a yes” until I started baking and my business. There are so many things that can be discouraging from no orders, feeling inadequate, not wanting to create content, etc. However, what you do in those moments is really what really indicative of your willingness to succeed. I’ve learned to use these discouraging moments as fuel to keep going, and every time I’m so grateful I never gave up on myself or this business.
