Today we’d like to introduce you to Venus Artist.
Hi Venus, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I come from an artistic family, so I’ve been involved in The Arts my whole life. My grandfather was character actor Rusty Lee. Other family members were writers, painters, and musicians. I’ve been involved as a musician, actress, writer, model, dancer, and painter. I was working on my museum studies degree at the University of Texas at Arlington when I started painting. I fell in love with it and have sold my paintings all over the world.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As a female artist, I’ve found it more challenging to get recognition compared to my male colleagues. However, I’m doing what I love and am recognized by my artist friends, family, and my collectors, which is the most important to me and keeps me inspired to continue painting.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a painter. I primarily use acrylic and oil. I’m known for portrait painting. But I don’t limit myself to one style or subject.
I think what separates me as an artist is I’m not afraid to try new things. My daily life is fully immersed in art as both an artist and as someone who appreciates all styles of art. So there are a lot of influences in my work. It’s not a hobby, it’s a profession and an obsession. I’m really passionate about it. And I think that shows in my work. I think collectors can appreciate my willingness to experiment and evolve as an artist. It is always exciting to see how an artist’s work changes over time, and to see them develop new styles and techniques. Art is such an important part of my life. I’m constantly exploring and growing as an artist. There is always something new and interesting in my work and that is exciting for both me and my collectors.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk-taking.
I’m definitely a risk-taker. It was risky becoming known for realistic style portraits then turning to abstracted portraits. People either love them or hate them. The great thing about art is it’s different for everyone. Every person will see and feel something different for a work of art based on their own life experience and taste. That’s the magic of art. So, I feel that any serious artist has to take risks because no matter what they paint, there will be critics. I’m not one to care about what people think. I paint for me what I’m feeling at the time. Some people don’t understand, but I’m working towards creating paintings that have more emotional value. Having studied so much art, I find notable artists incorporate 3 things into their work: beauty, mystery, and emotion. It has to give you an emotional charge in some way, even if it’s anger. If it gives you pause to look at it longer, that’s great art. I’m working towards that.
