Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Lane.
Elizabeth, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Creating art seems to be “in my blood”. My grandfather was a sculptor who taught in the Sorbonne in Paris as well as the U. S. Since I was old enough to grasp a crayon, I was always drawing. Wonderfully, my father was very influential in pursuit of this passion. Always encouraging me, always coaching me….training me to “see” beyond what’s obvious.
My formal art education began in school, all throughout high school and college, as students we were encouraged to seek, expand and experiment with artistic vision. The curriculum lent itself to trying different mediums, Thus, I had a background in everything from sculpture, in clay, wood and plexiglass, to fashion design to print-making to architectural design, painting and life drawing. As a result and to this day, creativity intrigues me.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I like to paint visions, for lack of a better term and as demonstrated in my feature painting “Ascending the Sun”. I was inspired by none other than the “Hi 5” our local 5 tier over-pass at U. S. 75 and Hwy 635 intersection. Driving over that expanse many times gave me a sense of soaring. The structure and marvel of engineering of this super over-pass is astonishing to me. Hence, I arrived at a design and painted it.
I paint in oils and acrylics; my subject matter is sometimes whatever inspires and intrigues me.
My primary “topics” of late have been focusing on equine works, landscapes and my interest in NASA Hubble telescope images. I love the colors, shapes, and contrasts found in outer space, against a “wallpaper” of stars, distant planets and galaxies. The nebulae are of particular interest to me.
I enjoy sharing what is my vision, in hopes the viewer will enjoy it as well. I like to lift the spirit, perhaps inspire people to forget everyday troubles, if even for moments in time. We are given a gift, of life on this planet. We have the choice of what to do with the time we have here on earth. The greatest gift of all, I think is to create beauty for the world to enjoy, even in a world that is sometimes not so beautiful.
In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
I believe trying to support themselves by their art is a struggle for most artists today. To that end much time is taken away from the studio to market one’s work. An artist must employ sales skills or learn how in order to be marginally successful. A huge challenge is to find and cultivate collectors. Finding a gallery to represent an artist is a challenge as well. There are only so many galleries and many more artists.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
My work can be seen on Facebook, at the Elizabeth Lane Artist page. I am also on the Xanadu Gallery (online division) as Elizabeth Lane, artist. I have my art on 2 other websites: elane.fineartstudioonline.com and a print on demand site elizabeth-lane.artistwebsites.com. Currently I am not represented by a “bricks and mortar” gallery. Spreading the word about my art is Always appreciated
