Today we’d like to introduce you to John Benitez.
John, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I have always had an interest in all things creative. When I was young, I spent a lot of my time skateboarding and playing music. I would watch skate videos constantly, and it was through these videos that I could indulge in both of my passions. I began to associate visuals with music and vice versa. These two art forms would inspire me to create the other and not stop until my vision was achieved.
I continued this into college where I pursued my music degree while taking classes in video and photography. These classes allowed me to learn the technical aspects of film and photography and provided a space for me to express my ideas.
When I graduated, I did what all artists do; I found a job doing something else! I spent some years after college trying to fit myself in the corporate world, quickly realizing that there was a reason why I chose to pursue the arts in school. I quit my corporate job and started looking for my place in the world. I interned for a music label, taught music, and eventually found myself as a sound designer/mixer for a post-production house in Dallas.
When I was doing audio, my love for photography resurfaced. I bought a camera thinking it was going to be a passing hobby, but instead, I was consumed with it. I relearned all the concepts I was taught in school while teaching myself new ones. I would practice for days on end, subjecting my family and friends to being in front of the lens. My love for photography quickly eclipsed my love for audio, but I didn’t know how to even begin working in the industry. That opportunity came soon enough when I was let go from my audio job. From that moment, I decided to change directions and pursue photography fully. It was a scary decision because I was essentially starting all over again, but it has been the best thing for me and my career.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a fashion and lifestyle photographer, but more than that, I like to think of myself as a storyteller. I’m inspired by people. People that live to create and have a desire to tell their story from a unique perspective. I like to find these stories by talking and interacting with people and not being afraid to ask questions or inquire about them. Whether they be a fashion designer, musician, or just the person across the street, we all have stories to tell, and they are all worth sharing.
When people see my work, I hope that it inspires them the same way I am inspired by others. I want to empower people and be the push they needed to pursue their dreams. My career is an example of doing just that. It’s not always an easy road, but it is road worth taking. I also want people to know that my work is ever evolving. I’m always learning new and unique ways to tell stories. Hopefully, through this evolution, my work will become unique unto itself.
How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
I believe that if you love what you do, you will naturally be successful at it. So many people choose a way of life that is “safe” or free from taking chances. I think in order to be successful at anything, you have to take chances! That doesn’t mean you have to risk your life, but you should be comfortable with being uncomfortable. While the definition of success is up to the beholder, my idea is to be able to take care of my family while continuing to do what I love to do.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
People can view my work on my website: www.john-benitez.com. You can also follow me on Instagram at @johnbenitez.
Our business is based mostly on word of mouth advertising, so interaction and engaging are critical. If you have worked with me and loved what I did for your project, forwarding those good vibes to others in the industry is always helpful and appreciated!
Also, we have an obligation to support ourselves by meeting with other creatives, networking, and maintaining relationships. I try to keep creating and producing content that is relevant and shows how my perspective can be an asset to telling your story.
