Today we’d like to introduce you to Maggie Schermerhorn.
Maggie, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I took my first art class when I was 5. through the years it became apparent that this was something I had to peruse. while in high school I’ve always tried to have some form of art in my life whether it was taking the class inside or outside of school. It was my happy and safe zone. At that time art was something that I had to want and to fit into my schedule. Once I when to college, I go two BFA in watercolor and painting and drawing. At the moment I’m pursuing my MFA for fine art at Pennsylvania Academy of the fine art in Philly. At times I feel so lucky that I’m an artist and able to make work all the time and then there are days where the creative is low, and I don’t know why I choose to be in this challenging field. But when someone like, comments, or buys something I have created with my two hands, I’m doing a calling and not a job. Creating something that I give life and then goes on to have a life of its own in the world is a great feeling. I often ask myself in my artwork and life ” does this help support the life I’m trying to create?” and so being an artist has.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My work is all over the place! At the moment I’m working on fiber sculptures along with collage drawing and pulling from my family history, though memories, traditions, and current feeling about events. Though my memories of place or story that have been passed down to me I’m able to extra information to help chose colors of fabric or the type of paint I want. Does the need to be a drawing or a sculpture? These formal desitions help me create intuitive decisions. So that when the view is looking at my work they can project their memories on to it. I want the viewer to see a shape or a color and be able to go back in there mind and full something whether it be joy or grief. The emotions are import to work and, it gives the work weight.
What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
By going to galleries on First Friday, having studio visits, if your able to have a studio in a space with other artists put your self out there to talk and open up. Don’t be afraid to message or email artists to ask questions or to open up a conversation.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
Social media or my website is the best way to see my work at the moment.
