Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Erickson.
Sarah, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’m a designer and calligrapher in a long-term love affair with letterform. I design heirloom wedding invitations for couples, and intentional brands for creatives.
I’ve always had a special affinity for letterform (I remember loving our penmanship class in second grade!), but it wasn’t until college that I picked up a nib and ink.
I graduated in December 2015 from Southern Methodist University with a B.A. in Creative Advertising and Graphic Design, and no intention of starting my own business. After graduating, I worked for a boutique design firm for a year and loved every minute of it… but I couldn’t ignore the tug on my spirit to serve my own clients wholeheartedly. With a heart full of excitement (and a dash of trepidation), I started my own business: Sarah Ann Design.
For over a year now, I’ve had the honor of designing dozens of custom wedding invitations and thoughtfully crafted brands.
Even though entrepreneurship can be challenging, Sarah Ann Design provides environment where I feel like I can serve well. I am able to walk alongside clients during a special season of their life—I am able to preserve their love stories and represent their brands.
As for me? I am wife to my high school sweetheart, and still thanking my lucky stars that he asked me to be his girlfriend when we were just fifteen. To experience life together thus far has been an immense joy and an awfully big adventure. Few things speak to my soul like a gorgeous ink flourish, but antique churches certainly come close. We now live happily nestled in Las Colinas with a dozen plant babies.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I design heirloom wedding invitations for couples and intentional brands for creatives.
My greatest hope is to serve clients on their walk toward marriage, or in their growth as a creative entrepreneur.
I believe wedding invitations can become a tangible legacy of your love story. Paper goods are one of the rare tangible memories of your special celebration; they are the first impression to your guests, and the last item you’ll hold onto for years to come. My ambition is that every piece of your invitation suite captures the essence of your unique love story.
If you take time to make these little envelopes a true joy and an undeniable reflection of your big day, they will absolutely be treasured—even after the wedding day is long gone.
Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
I am forever amazed by the opportunities available to me as a creative entrepreneur. The internet is brimming with inspiration, tutorials, and opportunities to connect with potential clients and industry peers. Because of our increasingly digital world, I am able to work with clients and collaborate with artists all across the globe.
I’ll echo a common sentiment from my fellow artists: shop small, if you can. There are plenty of big-box invitation stores that offer pretty designs for your wedding day… but they will always lack the heirloom quality and personalized character of a custom design made to reflect your special day.
Other than that, the best thing we can do for each other is spread the word! If you admire our creations or enjoyed working with us… please do tell your friends and give credit where credit is due. Your sincere referrals mean the world to us artists.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I would love for one of my hand-calligraphed envelopes to be delivered right to your mailbox someday! Until then, digital will have to do: https://sarahanndesign.co/. You can also find me on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/sarahann_design/.
If you have a friend or family member who is engaged, I would be overjoyed to hear more about their love story and get better acquainted!
