Today we’d like to introduce you to Caroline Susie.
Hi Caroline, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a registered dietitian with 16 years of experience focused on adult weight management and prenatal nutrition. My nutrition career began my freshman year of college. My nutrition class was the one class I NEVER missed! So I took this as a sign. Maybe I should do this for a living?! I have worked in outpatient nutrition education (weight management), diabetes and gestational diabetes management, bariatric care, and corporate wellness. It is so rewarding to educate people on the science of nutrition and lead them to food freedom (break free from diet culture!). Today I work primarily in consulting and private practice.
- don’t cut out a food group
- that all foods fit
- you shouldn’t take nutrition advice from a fashion blogger (no dig to them!)
- it’s about portion control, not food elimination.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Is it ever a smooth road?! Struggles include lack of wellbeing initiatives and support of leadership at various companies to lack of reimbursement from payers (insurance companies). It has been a learning process, to say the least. Additionally, in the past 16 years, social media has affected my business now more than ever. There is so much pseudoscience out there and I am constantly fighting to educate the public on evidence-based nutrition recommendations. Science is not an opinion!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
You can find me on Instagram @CarolineSusieRD. On this account, I post evidence-based nutrition education. Grocery store finds easy recipe tips with a dash of fitness inspiration. I am known for being a “carb crusader” and always “telling it like it is”! I am a dietitian who focuses on adult weight management and prenatal nutrition via Telehealth. I “see” patients virtually!
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Professionally: www.eatright.org www.todaysdietitian.com Personally: Up first (NPR), The Daily (NYT), and The Dallas Morning News podcasts keep me current. I would be lost without my calendar! I use iCal and Erin Condren.
