Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolyn Joe Daniel.
Carolyn, please share your story with us.
I am represented in the Southeast by Markay Gallery in Atlanta, and my work can be seen at Ross Towers and Mockingbird Towers in downtown Dallas. My art is available in fashion and textile/décor at Roma Boots, Zazzle, and commercially as large-scale wallcovering via Look Walls. I paint in my home studio, alongside two mini muses // budding artists. “I’m happy to have a small space & a few quiet hours late at night to create. I love building layers of paint that take weeks to dry. It’s life-giving and brings me joy.”
And recently, from an instagram “about me” post about how long I have painted: The short answer, it feels a bit like forever, a wonderful 20+yearlong ribbon of color tying together my memories… I majored in art as a teen at Wake Forest, I loved late nights in studio and early mornings working in a bakery, always a sucker for coffee & cookies.
I studied at Oxford and worked in a couple of art galleries in Sydney, Australia. I came home to Dallas for the buying program at Neimans. Then 9/11 happened and changed our world forever. Some soul-searching and a God who always provides led me to teaching children’s art. A great joy. Later I moved to Austin to pursue art of a different kind, culinary arts (as a kid my grandparents had a Chinese restaurant and I’d always wanted to learn to cook). While in culinary school I painted in my loft downtown and showed my paintings in coffee shops, happily sharing some of my early travel-inspired pieces.
Austin was vibrant and always-encouraging and I’ll forever be grateful for such an inclusive community. I did my “culinary externship” in food writing for Texas Monthly and we got married and moved to Philly for my hub’s grad school. In Philly I painted in the living room of our brownstone (built in the 1800’s with high ceilings and glorious light).
Fast forward a decade, babies + a whole lot of living, and I realize painting has been this life-giving faithful friend, no matter the city no matter the season. Nowadays I paint from my humble studio with my studiopup and I can’t wait to see what the future holds. I feel lucky to work with designers creating custom pieces for residential & commercial spaces and my art has been adapted to fabrics, textiles & fashion. I am filled to the brim with gratitude for the example of so many inspiring creatives along the way.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I paint large-scale abstract works full of color & light and messy joy… my pieces are modern, fresh, and evoke a happy celebratory vibe… I believe are is for everyone and that color energizes and unites us in beautiful ways.
I also do modern portraiture work and have recently created large scale colorful portraits of Winston Churchill, Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton
Something a little funny about me / my work, I have synesthesia, and see numbers in colors… I often wonder if God gave us the spectrum to help us grasp infinity…
What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
(continued from my instagram about me) *If you make things, write, sing, ice skate, garden, climb mountains, race bikes, whatever you dream, DO IT… do it with all your heart and do it a little bit every day. And may it bring you immense joy in your next 20 years.💛
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
