Check Out MarQui McGill’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to MarQui McGill.

Hi MarQui, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Space and Grace Counseling is more than just a private practice where people can seek support, safety, and emotional growth, it is my purpose. From a young age, I can remember having a passion to help and support others, maybe to some degree because I was wanting that for myself and my family.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I grew up in a broken household with a parent that was struggling with addiction, which in and of itself can evoke feelings of helplessness. My original plan was to go to Texas Tech University for undergrad and law school to become a family lawyer, thinking that law was going to be my platform to best help others. After graduating from Texas Tech, I quickly learned that law school was not my path and went down a rabbit hole of questioning and reflecting, trying to learn about myself and what I could do to fulfill this imprinted vision. After several months of questions and to be transparent, fear, I decided that I would embark upon this journey of counseling. I decided to attend Texas Woman’s University for my master’s program in Marriage and Family Therapy, where I began to put the pieces of my purpose and vision together. Now, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I can see how my life experiences have merged with my profession.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
The interesting thing about being a therapist is that this work inevitably forces you to do the work yourself. I incorporate experiential and narrative therapy techniques in my work with clients because I truly believe that we can change the narrative of our life. Space and Grace Counseling is a place where you can start this process of discovering what you want your narrative to be regardless of what you have been through, as a matter of fact, let’s use your life experiences to help you during this unfolding process. As a marriage and family therapist, I help individuals and families from all walks of life who are struggling and wanting to heal. I have worked with those struggling with addiction along with their families, those who are needing support during life transitions, and family systems who are experiencing conflict. I know struggle and pain, it can be scary, isolating, and defeating. Your story does not stop there, we can go through battles and still experience freedom, love, and connection, which is what makes my work with clients different. You are worthy of this space and I am looking forward to exploring along beside you how you can start to give yourself some grace.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
All you have is all you need. Your vision, your talents, your determination are enough! I truly believe that the experiences we all go through help lead us into purpose. From there, we simply have to work on trusting ourselves and giving ourselves the space to make mistakes because it will be a learning experience.
