Today we’d like to introduce you to Nate Nelson.
Nate, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Sometimes you look back at life and say, how did I get here? Well, entertaining has been something I was always doing. Whether it was at family get-togethers at a young age or being the lead in high school musicals. It wasn’t until college that I found my calling. I was an on-air personality on a college radio station. KSSU Power 92, in Durant Oklahoma at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. I got a call from a listener one night and they asked me to DJ a middle school dance in Kingston Oklahoma. I took that event for like a $100. I thought that was big time. Little did I know, that Middle school dance would lead to a career in music. 14 years later, I am one of the top private event DJs in the south, doing events for high-end clientele like Alex Rodriguez, Sean Lee, Adrian Beltre, Lindsey Vonn and The Dallas Cowboys. I have played concerts and opened for artist like Randy Rogers, Travis Scott, Waka Flocka, Jason Castro and Dem Franchise Boyz.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Art to me is Music. I do not create the music, I create a soundtrack. For Weddings, Parties, corporate events, and social environments. Being able to create a soundtrack for a special event is an awesome experience. My favorite form of art is creating mix tapes. . . Yeah, yeah, I know. we don’t have tapes anymore, everything is digital. You can find my collection of mixtapes on Mixcloud and my account is djnatenelson.
Have things improved for artists? What should cities do to empower artists?
As far as the DJ world goes. There are tons of Areas where people can find live music in Dallas. Deep Ellum, Uptown, Main Street, Hotel Bars, Dive Bars, and just about everywhere in-between.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Like I just mentioned before, Mixcloud is a free app that is a platform for DJs to showcase their work. You can find over 75 mixes of mine on my Mixcloud, @djnatenelson. I had a series for 60 episodes called #WakeUpWednesday, it was a mix show I dropped early on Wednesday mornings so people could listen while getting ready for work, or on the ride into to work or school. My newest series is called Make-Up Monday. Since I am usually working on the weekends, I decided that I will make up my weekends on Mondays. We have a boat, and we like to go out on the lake on Mondays. So, I created a mix for us to listen to on the lake and then I post it after we get home that night. So, my guests on the boat get to listen to the mix before it ever drops to the public.
