Check Out Abigail Garcia’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abigail Garcia.

Hi Abigail, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been doing freelance modeling since I was in middle school-around 12-13 years old. I think what really started me off was when a photographer who was taking our choir school photos asked me and a friend to stay after school to do some shots. She was so kind and encouraging, and it helped build my confidence in front of the camera. From there my friends would take photography classes, and ask me to model for them. Eventually, once life went on, I stopped being as involved, until about a year or two after I graduated high school. I was browsing online and noticed an ad for a modeling and acting school. Growing up I would always picture myself as the characters on tv or movies, and it piqued my interest a lot. I decided to sign up for it and took the classes for about a year. After the classes, we were supposed to audition for and possibly be signed to a ‘mother’ agency that they collaborated with, but unfortunately, covid began and I decided not to audition. From there I began working with the photographers from the classes and even did a commercial and a short film with a director from there as well. About a year of doing freelance work by myself, I found a designer here in Dallas named Raul Torres and was fortunate enough to walk a runway with him for cancer awareness. We linked up a few more times, and I did some commercial work for his designs and outfits. From there I began rewatching America’s Next Top Model to get inspiration (corny, I know.) I took a keen interest in Kiara Belen, one of the models that won runner-up one season. I looked her up to see how she was doing and noticed she would take some students of hers on runways around the world. I decided to shoot my shot and send her an email with a few headshots, and she responded asking to FaceTime! I took a handful more classes with her (over zoom) and eventually I was invited to travel with her and her team (The Fashion Life Tour) to New York and London for Fashion Week. I walked 2 runways, for a total of 6 designers. That was back in September. My next goal is to finally be signed to an agency and begin to start commercial work, but really, I would like to get into acting more! It’s been a crazy ride so far and I can’t wait to see what else my future holds.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been easy! Being as I have no agency, I’ve had to look for photographers, designers, and anyone else to collaborate with myself. My family isn’t the most financially stable, so money has always been tight for me. In the industry, that is a big hurdle. I don’t have as much time on my hands as some other models do, since I have to work a ton of hours to even be able to afford a lot of the things I do.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I do modeling and acting, mostly commercial work but some runway. I have the most experience in modeling though, seeing as those are the easiest things to find. I also am a makeup artist-I have done makeup for weddings, yearbook photos, and other models. I do all my own makeup and hair for almost every photoshoot I have done, saving time and money for the photographers. I believe what sets me apart is that I am willing to go above and beyond for the perfect shot, and I try my best to listen to and work well with every photographer/creative I come across.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
Instagram has definitely been a big help to my career thus far. I have met the majority of the people I work with through there. Really, any social media app.
