Today we’d like to introduce you to Authors of The Air.
Hello Authors of The Air, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
First, we’d like to point out the members of the band and their roles, respectively. Benjamin Buono – guitar, lead vocals. Ryan Fairbanks – bass guitar, lead vocals, producer. Stephen Esdale – drums, backing vocals. Bradley Glanzer – guitar, vocals, rapper. Ben began recording his own music because he had no one else to play with after his previous band dissolved. He recorded ‘Before Dawn’ and ‘Semi Hollow’ with Ren Albieri who produces under the alias, Ne.Hau. Shortly after, Ben recorded another song called ‘History Repeating’ with fellow musician and producer, Felipe Guerrero, of Vanilla and Pepper, who also lent his talent for the lead riff in the track. It was at this point Ryan reached out to Ben to be the first artist Ryan recorded in his very own “Static Studios”. This is where the track ‘As Is’ came to life, with Ryan lending his ranged and airy vocals to this reggae at its roots track. Ben then met his co-workers, Bradley Glanzer and Stephen Esdale. At first, he found out that Brad used to play music and rap and coerced him into sharing an old song of his. After hearing it, Ben sent Brad a guitar riff to which he wrote lyrics. Ben and Brad recorded the lyrics on Ben’s iPhone and sent the original recording to Ryan, who then created the rest of the track around this recording. This would lead to them releasing the track ‘Stitched Smiles’. Afterward, Stephen mentioned he played drums. Ben and Steve jammed one day and from that point, Ben, Ryan, Brad, and Steve released the collective songs as an EP titled “How To Catch Vibes” under the assumed name ‘Authors of The Air’.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We are a very young band. We wouldn’t say we’ve had struggles as far as a band goes, but our own individual struggles have definitely led us to what has been a smooth and cohesive, collective opportunity between us.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are definitely most proud of all the work that we each put into creating our music. Ryan is a ridiculously talented producer and picked up bass just for the band. Ben is unmatched in lyrical ability and his rhythms are always catchy. It takes a special type of talent and dedication to pick drumming back up after not playing in years, which Stevie has absolutely stepped up and taken over that role. For Brad, he’s just happy to be writing again after being out of the industry for nearly a decade and being in an actual band for the first time, also after not playing guitar consistently in years. It’s always fun to see the crowd’s reaction to him rapping in our songs because it’s unexpected, and he’s good at it. We get excited and inspiration from what’s happening within the band. Whatever is going on with us individually, we bring to the group and present our ideas and we all form music around that. It’s what we feel is most important to portray. There’s one thing we wanted to stay away from, and that was being a genre-specific band. We wanted to use our individual experiences to be able to have all different types of music influenced into one. Indie, reggae, rap, whatever we feel like playing. We even have a bossa nova track that’s yet to be released. We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished in our short life span as a group and look forward to what’s next to come. Speaking of what’s next to come, we will be releasing our first full-length album, “Modern Waves” on March 15th, 2022. We will be releasing it independently on all major platforms.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The music industry is consistently changing. We don’t think that’s something you can really predict. We just hope to still be a part of the collective and contribute, and most importantly, give insight to whoever would like to listen to our music. If there’s any big shifts, changes, or trends coming, we probably will still be adhering to our process because it’s proven to be what sets us apart.
