Today we’d like to introduce you to Oluwagbemisola Olugbenle.
Oluwagbemisola, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My love for creativity really started from high school – I always loved any art project we did. Whether it was drawing, painting, batik, tie and dye or making those birthday gift bags from scratch. In community college, I continued drawing as a hobby. Then during my undergraduate studies at UT Arlington, I started doing graphic designs and video edits as the creative director in my Christian fellowship (RCF) even though I knew nothing about it at the time which kind of inspired me to start painting again. I would create paintings and give them to my friends because I didn’t want to keep them with me and there was just joy from giving someone an art piece you made. I was recognized for being a creative and decided to brand @madebygbemos
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I would say the main challenge with being a creative is getting into a creative rut where you stop creating because you can’t seem to execute any idea (if you have one at all). This is typically one of my biggest challenges, especially with being a student. Sometimes art has to take the back burner while I focus on my studies. Sometimes I am my own obstacle too – with the self-doubt, perfectionism, and desire to impress. Above all, I’ve grown to overcome those challenges over the years and embrace my style and what I create – simply because I made it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a multidisciplinary artist and designer. I use different mediums to create visual art in addition to art/creative direction. My work spans across paintings, illustrations, and graphics. I’m proud of just going for it, putting myself in what I do, and giving it my best but also the growth I’ve had as an artist and self-taught designer. What sets me apart is what sets any creative apart — my style, my technique, and the fact that whatever the final product it was birthed from me. It’s a beautiful thing to be able to take a blank canvas and put a story on it.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I believe that everyone has a creative side to them and I encourage everyone to find it and embrace it.
