Today we’d like to introduce you to Ivan Gonzalez.
Hi Ivan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started my barber career back in 2009. At the beginning, it was not my top career choice, I was essentially starting because my mom suggested me to do it so I could help her out at her salon. She’s been doing hair for almost 30 years now. I graduated barber school in September of 2010 but at the same time, I was going to college to get my Criminal Justice degree which was my main goal. Barbering was just a way to make money while in college but it eventually became my passion. My clientele grew and within a few years, I became a high-demand barber with a 3-4 hour wait and cutting about 25-30 people DAILY. I knew I was doing something right. In 2019 I became the owner of Ivan’s Barbershop and with that, I was able to employ 7 other amazing and talented barbers. My barbershop is not only my platform to show my art but it allows others to share theirs too. After being licensed for 11 years I feel very satisfied and proud of my accomplishments because they reflect my hard work and dedication.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. From the beginning, I had a high standard that I had to meet because my mom was the salon owner, so I had no other choice but to be good at cutting hair. Balancing school and being a high-demand barber was also a hard task to do. But I now realize it helped shape me into the barbershop owner I am today. Staying in business while being closed for two months during the pandemic was tough. It was stressful not knowing what would happen to us as barbers.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Cutting hair is art. It’s customizing each haircut for each person’s needs. I specialize in men’s traditional and modern haircuts and beards. I also do scalp micropigmentation. I feel that what sets me apart from others is my quality customer service and my constant urge to keep learning.
