Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Carroll.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I starting taking photos in 2015 towards the end of high school. I first got into cameras through my older brother because he would bring me a long on to some of his video projects for college. And through that, I started to really like the stills side of it a lot more than video.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I guess you could say it’s been a smooth but slow journey so far. When I first started photography, I was super into street photography because of all the other Dallas photographers I would see on Instagram. But after a while, I got tired of going all the way to downtown to chase light and wait for people to walk into this small patch of light lol. So that’s when I started to shoot more portraits of my friends to build up my portrait portfolio. Whether it was just cool portraits for them to post on their socials or my music friends that needed photos for their album art.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a photographer that specializes in fashion and portrait work mainly but I shoot anything! I would say I’m known for creating very natural and raw portraits for my clients.
I’m most proud of myself for not giving up on this dream and continuing to learn and get better at my craft every day. Because I still have a long ways to go! And I’m also very happy and thankful for all the friendships I’ve made through this journey.
I think what sets me apart from others is my ability to adapt to whatever environment I have available and to make the best out of it. For example, during the beginning of Covid when everything was shut down, I wasn’t able to book any studios to shoot in so I had the idea to try setting up my own little studio in my grandpa’s barbershop. And the first shoot I had in there ended up being the Model Agency’s favorite shoots of mine. Ever since that response I’ve used the barbershop for literally every test shoot and they continue to love the images I produce in the shop!
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
I mainly use Instagram to get my inspiration and ideas for my photoshoots.
