Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Dawson.
Hi Jessica, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Ever since I can remember, I’ve always been extremely creative. Using my hands and my imagination was always my thing. It started off with drawing; as I got older, it became makeup. I saw my face as an empty canvas. As I was ending my time in high school, I had to decide what I wanted to do with my life. I decided to enroll in cosmetology school. I graduated in 2017 and immediately started my career months later. That’s where hair became my second passion. I’ve been doing what I love for the past 6 years, and I couldn’t be any happier with what 18-year-old me chose as a career!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely had its ups and downs. Even from still being in beauty school, I was hitting a lot of bumps in the road. With things going on with my health to negative things happening in my personal life. I had to place my priorities in other things, forcing school to the bottom of the list. I ended up taking two years to graduate when it was only supposed to be one. But I persevered and got it done. Now in my professional life, the job and the industry itself has its ups and downs. Having to struggle through the slow seasons so you can thrive in the busy seasons. Trying to stand out in such a competitive field. It’s all about giving and taking!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I like to say I’m a jack of all trades. Anything that involves creativity, I’m on it! I’ve done graphic design, tattooing, hair, makeup, etc. But ultimately, my passion is hair and makeup. I started off doing freelance makeup in 2014. It’s what got me to go to beauty school; it only made sense to be able to off hair and makeup! I specialize in “full glam” makeup and hair styling. I can do anything from Hollywood waves to updos or a soft glam to a smoldering smokey eye. I definitely think I’m most proud of my diversity. I’ve taken it upon myself to take everything as a learning experience. I’ll watch videos, practice on models, study other techniques, all so I can improve the work I put out.
What matters most to you? Why?
Seeing people happy. There’s no better feeling than revealing a final look to a client and just seeing them overwhelmed with happiness. It has always been my favorite thing about my job. Being able to do something I absolutely love and for it to be so appreciated by someone else. It makes my heart melt. I’ve had clients nearly cry seeing themselves after I got to do their hair and makeup. And not even just with my career but in my day-to-day life as well. I love seeing the people I love and care about be happy.
