Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Saldivar.
Hi Karen, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
When the pandemic started, I lost my job. Everything could have been darker and stressful. However, I was peacefully waiting for the perfect opportunity to come. I got some job offers but to be honest, I barely felt attracted to them because I was looking for something deeply meaningful.
One day, I tweeted about giving online lessons, and amazingly, that post went viral, becoming super popular thanks to that I got students from Vegas, Orlando, LA, Dallas, and Mexico. As a language freak, I really needed a job that allowed me to transmit the passion I own. Therefore, I started teaching English, French and Italian freelance classes, and I consequently felt so fulfilled motivating and connecting with people. If there’s a will, there’s way.
Suddenly, my schedule was full and I had no time for any new student at all! It was the beginning of a challenging new chapter in my life. I decided to hire teachers, setting up my own online languages school: Worldwide Citizens Academy. Its fundamental roots are the transmission of this project original passion, the creation of a connection with our students, and the support they need in their second language acquisition.
Currently, we have students from Latin America, USA, UK, and Europe and besides English, we are teaching Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, German, and Russian. We have reached more than 5000 followers on our Instagram account where a lot of good reviews can be found.
This has been a rewarding and enriching journey and we are eager to accompany everyone who is willing to learn a new language.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Considering I do love languages in all their extent, my general experience has been certainly smooth, however, there has been some aspects that you have to deal with, such as to find the teachers who perfectly fit my learning process vision; to have enough time to take a variety of courses, like business management, teaching and those ones that help me to properly grow my content creator skills.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
The team management is a central part in this process and entails coaching teachers, matching potential new motivated students aka ‘Worldwiders’ with my committed professors and finally keeping an eye on every student need through a regular monthly interview in order to follow up their advance.
Although my major is in translating, I have mainly specialized not only in teaching languages but also getting international certifications in English, Spanish, French and Italian. Besides, we provide a constant support advising people during their whole job application process, including the design of the resume along with cover letter and the interview preparation.
We are known for the passion we imprint in everything we do, which makes me feel so proud about what we have achieved in such little time.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Beyond what most people may think, taking risks is not necessarily to exert all your capabilities whenever and wherever. The key to succeed is to find the perfect timing and opportunity to pursuit your dreams, before that, you should be prepared in advance waiting for your chance to come. Provide yourself the necessary knowledge by studying and training. Believe me! If you really try hard, the opportunity will inevitably show up, are you ready to take it?
